Ive just had to send my new Dell XPS i7 6Gb 17.3" HD WLED Laptop back as the screen has an antiglare layer
This layer gives the impression my photos have specks of white all over them, I spent an hour cleaning up an image struggling to see why anything I did was not working.

So, I'm in the market for a Windows Based Laptop, 17" and £ 1400 budget.

recommendations please :)

doesnt sound like an issue caused by an antiglare screen? i think andy arad85 uses an XPS, might be worth asking if he has the same screen.

best off asking a mod to move this to the computer section too, might get better advice.

Im pretty sure my alienware laptop has a similar if not exact same screen (both dell now) and Ive never had an issue with specks of white.

Are you sure it wasnt just poorly made, and had gotten specks of dust stuck under the screen? Not exactly an uncommon occurance for dell.

A trick i learned while messing with a polarized filter,
Take the filter then hold it up to your eye, pirate telescope style!
Now with your screen on slowly turn the outer ring of the filter until the image on screen disappears! Magic i know.
Now you should be left with a black screen and any dust will show up brilliant white! You will be amazed at how much crud will be on there.
And you can then determine if the dust is on the outside or inside of your screen

the screen (1920 x 1080 WLED was an upgrade I opted for ( extra £ 120 worth )
Engineers just been and changed for another screen and its exactly the same.
its like crystaline swirls, best seen if you put up WORD and a plain white screen, its horrible.

Didnt see the computers section here on TP ( I did look, just not hard enough) to post into. sorry.

I'd honestly be more tempted to get a 14" or 15.6" laptop with a decent external 24" monitor.

Lappy screens are a compromise at the best of times and really only good for using in the field.

Get a 1.1k laptop with a 300 pounds IPS monitor. much better for working with photos ;)

You don't need to spend anywhere near that amount. My £400 Acer 14" handles everything thrown at it, including HD video rendering, albeit with a RAM upgrade.

I'd rather have one that works - unless someone is kind enough to give me a fully spec'd MacBook Air that is!

Thanks for moving thread. I've had a look at Mac Pro screens and they are gorgeous, but, having removed my desktop setup from the front room and gone the laptop route, I rather like the extra space we now have at home. Plus all my windows software, I could dual boot a Mac but it's all a bit of a compromise.

Alien? I'm not gong Dell again, so, I'm now looking at the Toshiba Qosmio X770-107, or the HP Envy 17 3D

There is the Asus Lamborghini but its another £1000 ! I don't think I need to get that silly :-)

Hp envy might be worth a look, every toshiba I've seen has fallen to bits. Otherwise dell xps, you don't say why not dell but the higher end laptops are very good.

Read the first post again ! ;)

He does. 15.6" and HD screen. No issues as described by the OP though...

I've got the XPS 15z with the 1920x1080 and no screen oddities here.

Nicest laptop Ive owned, only time will tell to see if it is tough enough.

well, I bit the bullet

the new HP ENVY 17 with i7 Sandy Bridge CPU, 6Gb and HD screen
£ 899 with todays voucher code discount :-)

Nice :)
