What's a good cheap MP3 player?

Overall iPods are best.

They might not technically be the best, but the eco system of software, accessories, docks etc. make them the best.

What sort of budget are you looking at? ipods are great but at the opposite end of the scale you can get some really cheap players from China via fleabay.

Budget and amount of storage you are looking for would help significantly :)

Just got a sansaclip and it's excellent for the money, 8gb internal storage and 8gb on memory card if required all for less than 50 quid from play, sound quality is excellent

It was recommended by the drummer in DOH band who has had, creative's, ipods and god knows what else and reckons its the best of the bunch, have to say i like it a lot

Many thanks for replies. That gives me a few ideas.

Call me old fashioned but anything more than a guinea for a record player or wireless set seems extravagant. And why would anyone want to play more than one song at a time? :D

I bought both my parents an mp3 for their birthdays, my step dad got an Archos 28 4GB for £35, while I got my mother an Archos 18b 8GB for £15. Both at Asda (Online for the 28, instore for the 18b).

They're selling them off cheap at the moment, as they're not the greatest devices. The 28 has Android 2.1 installed and doesn't do too bad a job, it won't play Angry Birds but it does play iPlayer radio (not video). Internet browsing is fine. Video and audio play back are fine. I see it as a decent priced mp3 player, with the added bonus that you can check your emails/browse forums on it.

The 18 does its job as an mp3 player fine, again for the price you pay it's good.

Once again thanks for suggestions. I've ordered one of the Sandisk Sansaclip players as recommended by Liz. £28 including delivery. If anyone's interested I'll let you know how we get on with it.

Don't think he'll be dissapointed, i'm married to a muso who insists on having the best sound quality he can afford in the house, and he's happy with his £28 sansaclip as well:)

^ What kind of muso is he?

Bass guitar, was pro for a short while back in the day never made any money lol but did do a couple of tours

The Sansaclip 8gb arrived Saturday and I'm just blown away by the quality of the sound. It's like listening to a good quality hifi.

When it arrived I thought that the thing I could see was a remote control or something but it's the actual MP3 player. It's about size of large postage stamp! Seems solidly made with a strong clip to attach to your belt/sleeve/whatever. Good pair of earphones too. Really easy to use and loading up music/podcasts is so simple.

My son is really pleased with it. Thanks for your advice Liz :)

Edit: My son is just starting bass guitar - he's been playing 6-string for about six months and going well with it.

Glad he likes it, see it doesn't have to have an I in front to be any good, I know I was very surprised when I plugged mine in
