I`ve been asked to take some pics at a local junior football match, and I don`t have a suitable lens. I want to spend as little as possible but at the same time buy new. Should I be looking at a 70-210 or a 70-300, I have a Canon, I guess IS is needed. I must say again cheap, cheap. :)

i'm not familiar with canon equipment, but both the lens you have quoted have suitable focal ranges, and with apertures of 4-5.6 i would guess.sigma do a 70-300 F/4-5.6 APO DG macro for around the £125 -£150 mark.you might get it a little cheaper from microglobe, but you will not get the sigma UK 3 yr warranty as microglobe get them from china,USA etc...

hope this helps

IS isn't going to be any real benefit for shooting football so you may be better going for a fast non-IS lens to get the best for your money.

Why don't you hire the lens? Cheaper than a purchase me thinks:D Unless you want an excuse to spend some money!!

I think the cost of hiring a lens for a couple of occasions would be more than buying a cheap lens and deciding to sell it again if I don`t use it too much. Thanks for the suggestion though, I always see hiring as money down the drain unless you need fantastic optics for just one occasion or you want to try before you spend vast amounts of money. :)

Sounds like a great idea.

Also usefull to know, is it because the action is too fast for the IS to work?

IS will help compensate for camera shake and not subject movement. The lens body has a couple of gyros in it and they detect movement, there is nothing optical about the way IS works.
