Yes
THE BRIEF: i'd like a small portable light set up to be used for family portraits and a bit of on the go stuff. i had a dabble with some window light and a cheap backdrop this weekend and i wouldn't mind experimenting before getting too serious.

what would recommend to a person thats looking to dabble in portraits but able to create something thats above average.

Windowlight.

It’s free,

More seriously: if you have mains power available, buy some mains powered lighting. It’s much better than speedlights if you’re going for a ‘studio’ setup.

Lencarta do great starter kits with brilliant after sales, or buy S/h to cut the cost of it being a temporary glitch in your photographic life.

There’s some great tutorials on the Lencarta site too.

cheers Phil, yes the idea was hopefully to use mains and create a "studio"

I will have a look at the Lencarta equipment, cost isnt too much of factor after xmas that is ( 3 kids birthdays in 4 weeks & a holiday )

i say portable i mean being able to shoot in other places other than my house. not like in a forest but halls houses etc etc
I like the ability to shoot without needing the main with my 2 speedlights and the AD360. Relatively compact and light though Ofcource speedlights does come with a disadvantage or two.
Modelling light is one though its not that much a deal to me
Power is another for Speedlights and it can be a problem but it's not that big an issue to me either.
Last the fresnel design cause more direct light that can have problems if you want to use big modifiers and sometimes gives you hotspot with your modifiers.

But speedlights ar light, very portable, relatively powerfull still, very versatile and the fresnel design and artikulation head also gives you some cool tricks to play with using the zoom, on camera bounceflash etc.
If portability is of importance you can do a lot with speedlights with few drawback.
