Yes
Just want to get some people's input.

My Canon 1D MKIII's LCD screen cracked due to falling one evening (was in a bag and the bag fell but the camera was on top of my 70-200 lens and the LCD cracked when it banged against the lens)

The damage is to the actual LCD screen and not the outer protective plastic screen.

I called Canon for a repair quote they said the camera is too old and they don't repair it anymore.

The camera has low actuation as I hardly used it and still in mint condition apart from this cracked screen :(

Should I claim on house insurance? and if I do, do I tell them the retail price when new (I bought this camera brand new when it came out) or the going price now?

Thanks all

Does it still work with the cracked screen?
Can you get it fixed anywhere other than Canon and what will it cost?
If you claim on your house contents do you loose any no-claims bonus
What is it worth fixed/ unfixed?( MPB have them from £299-440).

When you say it is indeed the LCD itself.................do you mean that the screen no longer displays right e.g. colours wrong, incomplete coverage. I have yet to read of such damage where the outer protective cover is undamaged but the LCD itself is cracked!

Perhaps a picture of the rear of the camera with the screen displaying something to show us how bad it is???

I'll post a photo in a bit. Just need to find it on my emails as I've deleted them from my phone.

It still works but I can't change settings or view photos because of the cracked non working screen.
That's the thing... I know they're cheap now but those ones for sale will not be as mint as mine or will have the low actuation as mine (I really didn't use mine much because it was my baby and I tended to use my old 20D for most stuff)
If I'm going through insurance, I just wanted to know if they will replace the camera or will repair it.

A couple of photos

That must have been quite an impact to crack/shatter the LCD and not also destroy the plastic "protective" screen.

The 1D3 is a pro grade body.......I would have thought that level of damage would be very rare!

When you say you called Canon was this their Elstree facility who advised it is no longer supported for repairs? I wonder if they could advise a third party repairer who bought up some end of life spare parts. Just maybe a third party repairer might even have donor bodies to canabalise to effect your repair???

It depends on the terms of your insurance. Some insure on a like for like basis, others would give market value. Read your policy documents carefully.

You might be able to buy a dead 1D3 with some other fault, and get one of Canons repair centres to fit it for you.

Well it was packed in my camera bag placed on top of a table. The camera body is on top of my 70-200L with padding in between. Then in the middle of the night, I got woken up to a loud thud. Realised it was my camera bag that fell... and went back to sleep not thinking much about it.
A few weeks later, when I needed to use the camera, that's when I noticed the LCD when I first switched the camera on and that's when I realised what had happened.

Yes, it was Elstree. They did give me two camera repair centres. I contacted both. One doesn't have the part and the other does and gave me a quote of £200 for the repair

So I'm wondering if insurance will replace the camera (hopefully a new camera for the same brand new value) or will try and repair it. If it's the latter, then I'd rather pay for it myself than go with insurance.

I had already bought a Canon 7D to replace the camera as I needed it for that first weekend in Nov.

Well, we can't tell you what your insurance policy terms are. I recommend an independent guy near where I live. His name is Don Clark in Wootton under Edge.

To sum it all up you would be claiming for what can be fixed for £200 (+ postage I guess) or £300-£450 for a second hand camera but not necessarily in good condition. Fair enough if they pay you what you paid. Keep in mind that will be down as having made a claim, premium may go up next year etc. and do not even ask the insurance company unless you really intend to make a claim (they will register your enquiry even if you do not claim etc.).

Is it worth fixing? £200 repair on a £400 camera? Time for a replacement or a better model?
I guess only you can decide that but £200 in terms of Camera kit isn't a lot of money

If you really like the camera and it's mint otherwise, I'd get the £200 repair done....from the sound of it you'll never be happy with a replacement of the same model. Tbh, if you claim through insurance you'll have to pay the excess, then they'll inevitably bung your premium up next year. I'd just swallow the cost and write it off to experience.

I agree. Sometimes it's better with something you know the full history of

I expect they will try to get it repaired if they can. If it cannot be repaired, does your policy provide new for old cover for accidental damage?

You may get new fro old cover if it's non repairable so you may get a 1DX if that's the equivalent these days.

I agree with this. Whats the point of paying for insurance if you don't use it. Your camera has lost a significant amount of features because of an accident. Either you're on new for old or value of camera- no one will give you what you paid for it, even if it's never been out the box. If you're not new for old then lesson learned for next time. If you are new for old then a 1dx or 1dx ii is the most likely scenario although it might be a 5D or similar might hit all the boxes after such a long time.
