I wanted to buy a lens to fill the gap between my Sigma 10-20mm and the Canon 24-105mmL, so I thought of Canon 16-35mm f/2.8 (@+-800.00).....Then I had an idea of bying...

Canon 17-40mm f/4L
Canon 50mm f/1.4 (to replace my 50mm f/1.8)
and a Canon ST-E2 Speedlite Flash Transmitter
All for about £700.00.....

Now, all I need to know is:
If I was you, what would you do? Save a bit more for a 16-35mm or?

WHy do you need to fill the gap. I am sure you will hardly notice the 4mm. Just work forwards or backwards a bit and hey presto!
 
I tend to agree - foot zoom! The 16-35mm is a lovely lens, and would add f/2.8 and L quality to your line-up, but probably doesn't bring substantial benefit in other terms. The exception would be if you were considering a full-frame upgrade (i.e. 5D) in the future, as the your 10-20 would resemble a porthole then :)
 
I don't know what you plan to shoot but the f/2.8 of the the 16-35 would allow a little more creativity in this range.
There's quite a premium to pay for it though.

Or if you find you need 2.8 would the 17-55 EF-S with IS not be a better bet, can be had for under £600? By all accounts its as good as an L lens.
 
Agreed... If you want to add a lens think of something in the 70-200 sort of range.
Question? Why do you want the ST-2 speedlight transmitter. If you have a 580 this will act as a controller, and allow you to set flash ratio's for up to 3 flash units

Because I have the Speedlite 430 EX and no the 580 EX...

the 17-40mm is an amazingly good lens, so solid, but I do agree with others that there's hardly a need to 'fill the gap'. 4mm of focal length is nothing and to be honest, I bet like most of us, you use your lenses at max or min focal length 90% of the time. Zooms are great but in relaity, how much of the zoom do we actually use?
