No
As the D60 approaches the end of its life, there is sure to be somthing coming along soon; but what will Nikon call it?

Generally, Nikon tend to name the new product "one-up" from the existing one .. D40, D50, D60 (D40x was the one exception here); D70, D80, D90; ... D100, D200, D300 and now the rumored D400.

So, given that the D70 was already released half a decade ago, what would Nikon call the next D60?

Just curious

D60x sounds a bit lame; Eric, now

Desmond has a nice ring to it.

D60x I think. Using the D40x as a precedent.

I still reckon it's too soon for a D60 replacement.

I think we'll see a D40 replacement, but with a 12 megapixel sensor.

The D60 replacement will have more than 12 megapixels I think. But the D400 will need to come first.

Bob.

Desmond, Bob, why have you lot only suggested guy's names. Why not a Lucy or Janet?

Seriously, I would love to see how they get "creative" on this.

D50 was out before the D40 though... D40x was a higher MP version of the D40 (same as D2x, D3x and soon to be D700x)

Maybe the new one will be D20? or D30?

I think JoeT probably hit the nail on the head.
New models without an x suffix will probably be D*5's.

Surely the D60 is the D40 replacement?

I don't think so!

The D60 is a 40% price increase over the D40 .. and that's a huge price gap even though by "photography measure" that difference of £90 isn't very big. It still is from a marketing point of view.

The D40 is priced as the cheapest dSLR, while the D60 is price otherwise.

The D60 replacement may bring about a D40 replacement; but I doubt Nikon will let go of the cheapest entry dSLR thrown to anyone ... unless they will forego the position where the current D60 sits.

I was always very keen on the D60's IQ (much better per-pixel sharpness than the D200, with much better autoWB too), and I think the D40 might be even better.

Its a titchy little thing but takes really nice pictures, got my Sigma 50mm f/1.4 on it at the moment, feels a great combo actually :)

I'm quite fond of these tiny little bodies.

That's now - how much was the D40 when it was released?

Sorry, I don't recall what was the price ; but I am certain it was one of the cheapest, if not the cheapest dSLR then too.

On that note, it no longer matters what the price was back then. Since, the market is dynamic and has resulted in Nikon now having the cheapest dSLR ... something they will not forego.

Which leaves us with the same dilemma ... what would they call the next one up? And where will they position it.

The D40-D90 class are responsible for 90% of Nikon's sales volume for cameras, so it (whatever "it" is) will slot in right where it is now.

I think they have got it all wrong from the start, it would have been a lot easier if they had left the pro ones D1,D2,D3,D4 etc then the semi pro ones 100 then gone to 101 then 102 rather than D200,D300 the "between entry level and semi pro ones" as D200,D201 etc (D70/80/90) then the entry level ones as 300,301,302 with full frames at 400,401,402 and pro full frame 500,501 etc... Lack of foresight if you ask me and bound to cause problems later.

If they had then we would never be having this conversation, our ancestors would !

But let's say Canon used to have the lowest DSLR before the D40 came along, don't you think they didn't want to forego having the lower price?

It all comes down to competition - at that end of the market, price is probably the biggest factor, so they'll offer what they can to get the buyers looking at their products, be that a low price or a cashback offer.

I would have thought the D40 was accountable for 89% of Nikon sales. Seriously, whenever I am in London I see every other person carrying one. They are just so well priced!

.....

Fair argument, but it is always the case of our ancestors not having enough foresight :p .. I guess the same will be said about us, by future generations.

You make a very valid argument, but if Canon did have such a dSLR and they relinquished that to Nikon, that - to me - that is a huge failing on their part! The entry level model not only is the cash-cow, but it is also the stepping stone into luring users into the more expensive stuff.

The one thing from all this is that it is all to the best interest of the users (us). As all this will give us better product at a very competitive price (though this is not the case right now here in UK :shake:).

Because Photography blokes will never put them down again  :naughty:

Yeah, I see so many D40's when im wandering around London, normally accomanied by a bored looking wife / girlfriend who wishes her husband / boyfriend had forgotten to pack the bloody thing.

It is a good camera for the cash though, as for the D60, DPReview.com didn't review it until March 2008, assuming that was pretty soon after release, will Nikon be replacing it? Maybe an upgrade? Who knows.

D5000 is the rumour ;) just hope it does not delay my D400 :D

Now that is interesting! Seeing that both Nikon and Canon follow the "D" and number coding, and that Canon have released the 1000D (or is it the D1000) .. then it does make sense that Nikon may go with something like the D5000.

It was from a Korean forum I believe, it makes sense because they have run out of two digit variations, how much mileage there is in it who knows.

The rumoured D400 is the one I would be interested in, crop sensor 14.8mp, I use telephoto's more than anything else shooting wildlife, so although the D700 is nice, all my telephotos shrink :)

Interesting, but this is supposed to be somewhere between the D40 and D90 .. not exactly the D40 replacement!

My money's on Winston. I like that name.

Winston :)

echo ..... echo

I've heard they're keeping the Japanese name for Euro release, competing with the Digital Kiss and Rebel XTi Canon releases but with a modern twist.

Its gonna be a Digital JapScat GTR

The touch screen model has an "i" on the end and runs on diesel.

:D

I'll have some of what Joxby's on please
