What wet weather gear for Football Togging.

Has anyone got any advice on what should be worn to keep dry and warm for pitchside football photography.

I know there are clothes out there that I can look at on the internet ect but I find that the people doing the job can sometimes give good advice.Thanks.

Dunno what you expect to hear fella?, as everone has a different take on things!
my basic reply will be obvious, but others will no doubt add brands to the basics! :)

1 waterproof trousers
2 waterproof jacket/coat
3 good quality boots/socks
4 flexable gloves
4 a good hat
5 good base layer clothing
7 good quality weather covers for cameras
8 Laptop waterproof cover or waterproof laptop
9 a selection of cloths & towels
10 spare batteries

I have been told to buy breathable waterproof gear. It costs hundreds of pounds for that sort of stuff! So was looking for the cheapest way to do it.Does anyone just use a kagool?

I knew where you where comming from that's why I replyed tonge in cheek!

1 waterproof trousers reggatta £19.00 Burghouse £50.00
2 Coat from £40.00 to £400
3 boots from £50 to £200
4 gloves from £2.90 to £40
5 base layers from £10 to £100
6 camera weatherproofs £40 to £300
7 laptop cover from £100 to waterproof lappy @ £600
8 selection of cloths! real shammy leather + total cotten towel £20!!

so you see it's not cut & dryed what you get/need?, if your shooting pro sports as I do then I have to bite the bullet & buy the best I can afford!, if it's just for local stuff where you can in the end say "sod it", then any lower spec will do!.

Having been subject to a severe drenching tonight at the Bolton v Bury game I can only say that you need good quality, breathable, gear just like you'd use for serious hillwalking. Add decent baselayer, hat, gloves and socks for the winter games. Always more bothered about my gear than I am about me getting a bit wet. If your gear packs up you're wasting your time being there.

I use a (recently acquired) Jack Wolfskin jacket @ roughly £170 and a pair of rapid dry hiking trs (£40) for my outer layer (I've always hated waterproof trousers, but that's just me).
Timberland boots at around £150 and appropriate under layers.

For keeping the camera kit dry, I'm in the Chamois leather camp. B&Q full skins at about £5 a go with a couple of spares incase they get too sodden. If its raining, the laptop stays under cover.

It there anyone out there that can just say go to Blah! Blah! and buy some plastic waterproof trousers and plastic waterproof top for £10 each and just keep them folded up in your shopping trolly(peli case substitute) until it rains.

This looks like it could be expensive!

I'm sure it's worth it though.LOL.

Thats all i did, all this expensive stuff is crap mate and some of it is too padded as to be too restrictive, simple thin base layers for warmth and breathability and a waterproof outer layer, waterproof is waterproof whether or not it cost £10 or £200

I have been looking on the net and have see some reviews on the regatta over trousers and jackets.I think that's what I will go for it should be about £50 max. I have some boots. It's just gloves,I tried fishermans gloves but they are too cold. I might have to spend on the gloves as my circulation is not what it was. I had never heard of this shami leather thing before? it it for cleaning the front element or just lens/camera body?

I bought my boots in Aldi for £20 and a pair of lined trousers there last winter for another £20. Lightweight Peterstorm jacket and pull on trousers for summer showers bought from Millets (use the jacket all year, not just footie games!). Personally, as I'm not a paid professional, if the weather gets close to monsoon conditions, I'm under cover!!! My winter jacket is also Millets, a £45 bargain.

Gloves are a more personal thing. I've tried loads. Last year I bought some bright pink 'iPhone' gloves with fingertips that you can use your phone while wearing. Just fine knit, but have done me pretty good. I also have some "Auntie Wainwright" fingerless mitts that I wear either on their own or with the gloves for 'extra'. Last winter wasn't that cold, so these were fine.

Chamois leather is used by lots to protect their camera. I don't quite trust it, so have a more 'traditional' waterproof cover. A cheap emergency option is optech rainsleeve. Park Cameras list one via google, but oddly seems to be error 404. Used to be about £6 for 2. Good standby.

Personally, and based on my limited experience of getting soaked pitch side I would say.

Protect in the following order of importance (assuming you are wiring pitch side)
1) Laptop
2) Camera & lenses
3) Yourself

I use basic waterproof but breathable legs and jacket. Waterproof boots as they tend to be the only things in direct contact with water all of the time, and base layers. The rest you should be able to source from your wardrobe.

You should be able to survive for 2-hours pitch side with that lot and do it under £100 for yourself - you'll spend more on a decent laptop cover, and certainly more on tailor-made camera/lens coats. But anything you buy for yourself you can wear again and again not just for a match on a Saturday.

For the cheapskates out there you can make two decent camera/lens waterproof overs by cutting a pair of children's waterproof trousers down the middle. Mine work a treat with 300mm and 70-200mm lenses - large rubber bands hold them in position over the lens hoods.

For those who like top end professional gear, I can recommend the 'cut a finger off a pair of gloves' technique, also the 'plastic bag rain cover' works a treat.

Gloves were great, plastic bag was poor planning, emergency solution (but worked, I could carry on shooting)! I learnt my weather proofing lessons the hard way, and took a fair bit of stick from the away fans.

On a serious note, keep your hands, feet and head warm!

wet weather gear? whats that. If its cold, some sox`s and a tee shirt

Laptop cover for the rain http://www.cliftoncameras.co.uk/Think_Tank_Pixel_Sunscreen

They aren't cheap at £62 but they are pretty good but not perfect. The advantage is that they wok well most of the time with light rain.

However, when windy my laptop has blown over a few times. Also at Millwall last season it was driving rain which still got in when I was lifting it up and putting it down. It is quite bulky so not great at grounds where you are pushed for space.

Alternatively my mate uses a thick clear bin liner. Easier to fold up, can see through it and can fold it under the laptop when it's belting down.

Or leave ya laptop in ya bag an nip to the stands at half time.

For trousers I got some ski pants from TK Max for £20. Lovely and warm, waterproof and can also go over other trousers or thermals.

I have the fishing gloves with the fold bacl fingers but they are pretty useless really.

Plenty of inexpensive waterproof boots in Sports Direct if you wish to make Mike Ashley a little richer...

Think tank also do the camera covers - but again these aren't cheap http://www.thinktankphoto.com/categories/camera-rain-covers.aspx

They are great for keeping your cameras and lenses dry but it can be a challenge to switch from one camera to another with them.
