I went out to take some pictures tonight and since I dont have any filters yet I tried to do this shot in multiple exposures and them merge them in photshop using the merge to HDR function, but when I did this it has left a strange effect around the tree edges, does any one know why this has happened and how can I get around it.

Not sure, the sky is a bit of a funny colour top right as well. Have you tried another HDR programme with it? Photomatix perhaps? They do a trial that you could use. It will watermark the output but all you want to check is the treeline anyway.
