What UWA prime for Nikon? Advice please!

Morning all!

Looking for some advice please :)

Went full frame a couple of months ago, and as I wanted a wide angle lens, I bought the body only and purchased a Sigma 15-30 (one of several recommended zooms thanks to people on here, I went for this one over the others as it was for sale 5 miles from me so I could get it right away and use my new camera ;) )

I use this lens mainly at 15mm for car photography shoots, but I find 30mm is good for car shows, but the depth of field at 30mm is 4.5. I have sold my 50mm f1.8 and thinking a 28mm (Nikon) f1.8 would be a good replacement as its still wide enough for tight spaces at car shows (I can get quite close to the cars) Or would you recommend something else?

I'll keep the 15-30 for use at 15mm ...

Don't think that a f/1.8 wide angle prime will give you anything like the DoF you got with the 50mm, as the angle gets wider the DoF naturally increases.

Still, if 28mm works for you then the new f/1.8 primes are fantastic.

Haha oh dear, am I gonna regret selling the 50... still it was pretty tight at shows iirc on a 50 - is there anything in between perhaps? I can only find a 35mm and its for DX.
 
It's only any good if the focal length works for you though - I don't really get on with 35mm as its not quite wide enough, others swear by it.

The 28mm 1.8 will give you shallower DoF, especially if you get close it just won't be like the 50mm.

Thanks Minnnt, I think the 28 or 35 will fit the bill the best for me as I am happy with the 30mm on my zoom, its just the depth of field thats disappointing. Plus being able to use a quicker shutter speed will be a massive bonus!
Nawty - I will most likely be up close due to the nature of car shows, so DoF will probably be good enough to satisfy me :)
 
The 28/1.8 is a cracker, and do shallowish DOF. At least it can with chickens!

The closest to a "definitive" definition of an Ultra wide angle seems to be one with a focal length =< the short side of the frame, so 24mm or shorter on FF and 35mm film. There are a few 14mm primes (f/2.8) around, with the Samyang seeming to be the most common - it's manual focus but in Nikon fit it does have the automatic aperture. There's a Tamron which turns up occasionally on the 2nd hand market which is AF and has easier to correct distortion than the Samyang (which might be important in car shots). IIRC there's a Sigma version at this length as well. In zooms, the 2 that spring to mind are the Sigma 12-24 and the Nikkor 14-24, with the Nikkor being faster (f/2.8 constant) but rather more expensive...
 
TBF 28 and 35 which are under consideration are not UWA so the title is misleading.

Go for the Nikon 28mm I reckon

Im wanting a prime ideally, as I have the 15-30 zoom - I was originally going to ask about uwa primes at the 15mm end, but to be honest Im quite happy with the zoom a wide end so I will stick with that, besides when using it wide open I want as much as possible in visible, whereas when doing single car shots at 30mm, its mainly about the car and I want the busy backgrounds to not distract the viewer.

Haha Ed love the chicken shot! Im quite happy with that DoF, so I will be looking around for a 28mm I think - thanks for the heads up on the classifieds minnnt, and also the info on the Art range ... :)

Yes, unfortunately when I wrote the post I was going to ask about whether anyone could also advise on a UWA prime around 15mm, then about 20 minutes later I decided I quite like my 15-30 lens and didnt want to part with it (i love it wide open) so I removed that bit from my first post, unfortunately I couldn't change the title tho!

28mm isn't ultra wide.

For a Nikon UWA prime you'd need to look at something like the 14mm Samyang. That's ultra wide on FF!

If you want a 24mm or 35mm, that's wide (on FF at least) but it's not in the bracket of a UWA, not by a long shot :)

Do people actually read theads when they post replies, it has already been discussed that the OP isn't actually after an UWA, see the post above from the OP

sorry this is my fault, i cant change the title *hangs head in shame* - i was originally looking for "wide" and "uwa" then had a change of heart at the UWA end :)

Ah ok!

In that case, maybe the new Sigma Art 24mm f/1.4? That's supposed to be very good indeed!

At least i read the thread, and have been following it from the start ;)
 
In day time its fine (the lowest f stop at 30mm is 4.5 on the 15-30) but in low light (some evening/night meets) it was beginning to struggle - I didnt want to have to carry the tripod around so found myself upping ISO as long as I could.
 
I bought a Sigma 24mm f1.4 Art for Nightsky shooting. Being very sceptical of Sigma's QA reputation I bought it 'nervously'

Having said that it performs really well on a D800 with amazing shallow depth of field - can recommend it.

Point of focus was on the '7' of the date on the plate. Aperture was f2.0 - still one to go :)

thats beautiful! this kinda thing is perfect for car shows when the backgrounds are cluttered with people etc!

Try (on a computer, not sure about tablets and phones) the "Thread Tools" button at the top of the thread. As the OP, you should be able to change the title.

That'll be the problem then I bet, I always use my phone. I'll try a computer later on today if i get the chance :) thank you!!
