I have recently purchased a Canon 60D and have a 150 to 500mm Lens. What Tripod would anybody recommend? Is aluminum best or carbon fibre. Will be aminly taking photos of wildlife Any help would be appreciated

Carbon is a hell of a lot lighter so that's why they are so much more so if you plan on walking long distance you need to think about this

Budget would have to include everything so say £200 to £300

If you're taking photos of wildlife then I guess that you need something fairly lightweight, which means CF. And, being of the female persuasion, I'll guess you're not very tall (less than 6 foot). So a short(ish) CF tripod a bit like the Manfrotto 190CXPRO3 at £210. But that doesn't leave much for a head - and you'll want a good head for that big lens.

Lots of people on here like Redsnapper (and TP members can get a discount). I've no experience with them, but their 283C looks like it would suit your needs for just £130.

That leaves us with the difficult bit - the head. Really you want a gimbal head like this. But that's a bit more than allowed for in your budget. I've never tried the Manfrotto 393 head, but lots of people use that for big lenses and it's only £120.

So the Redsnapper legs with the Manfrotto head will be a pretty good setup for £250. And then you can start saving for a real gimbal head.

Big welcome from me too Sue.

The Giottos MTL 8361B CF tripod came in very well in this review

and is available from Morris Photo, post free at just a shade under £180. If you like a pan n tilt head I can testify that the Giottos MH5001 is excellent as is their M1312-652 ballhead.

There are some lightweight and very effective aluminium legs around too. Vanguard make an excellent one in the 263AT but I would recommend a Giottos head to go with it.

Hope this helps
