What to use rather than iMovie (as you now can't split clips)

Yes
I have been pretty happy with iMovie - use it just for family stuff and generally just cut clips down in size with the odd WB and small tweaks. However, iMovie now doesn't allow you to split clips (i.e. you take a 10 sec clip and just use the middle 4 secs). Yes you can split but it won't delete the rejected clips so they take up space!

IF I was to change from iMovie it needs to be seamless as I have entered a lot of clips and don't want to rename or adjust them. Like the ease of use of iMovie, so nothing complex!!

I agree FCPX would be the logical choice. It's interface and the magnetic timeline is very similar to iMovie and you find the transition very easy. I used iMovie for a couple of simple projects years ago before migrating to FCPX and the change was very easy.

FCPX is just about usable, FCP7 was great, then Apple ruined it. After 4 years, it's just about OK.

Lightworks, Premier or Media Composer are good, DaVinci is getting there.

I second FCPX if you are working on Mac. Some of my friends used Sony Vegas on Windows but i have no experience with it. Worth trying though, as apparently it's very intuitive.

SONY VEGAS for me too.

Sony Vegas is really a great tool for video editing. Although many claim it's only for professionals, I began using it after a couple of years of Windows Movie Maker and got pretty quick the hang of it. It has a wide range of effects, maybe too many, and it's not that difficult to work with. Of course, the price is definitely a downside.

Another Sony Vegas user here, does the job nicely and has plenty of capability to grow into.

How about Premier Elements?

I've only dabbled with video so am no expert, but it seems quite powerful to me.
