I have just processed a lot of dancing pics for a local dance studio, and when I've cropped them I haven't thought about printing sizes. So some won't work too well with the standard 8x6, 10x7 and 10x8 that people now want to buy.

What do I do for the best?

When I go on photobox the red square will either cut off some of the dancers - or if I do shrink to fit i get quite a white margin around the outside.

I obviously don't want to cut off anyone, but I also don't want folks to pay for a 10x8 and find quite a bit of white.

:bang: what's the best thing to do?

what colour is the background Allan?

I always tell everyone this when taking and printing shots, a lot of people just dont realise the difference in edge ratio between the sizes.

There are two or three sizes of the same ratio and another 2 or 3 popular sizes of another ratio.

A4 is like 7x5 I think

6x4, 12x8 are the same but you can see that 10 X8 will have 2" off the edge.

back to your prob. could you increase the canvas size and make the increase the same colour as background?

Go to Bonus print online and get 9x6 prints.

If someone wants a 10x8" print, that doesn't nessaserily mean that you must have the image take up the whole size of the canvas, when I'm printing black and white photos from film, I hardly ever use the full size of the paper.

just trim the white off after its printed I say. Means people end up with some odd shaped photos, but hey if they like the pic enough to order it.....

I've had the same problem in the past which is why I now only offer prints that have a 3:2 ratio i.e. 9x6, 12x8, 15x10 and so on, luckily Photobox print all these sizes.

Yep...it's the best way to go.

Either that or make sure you leave a big gap round the edge when taking the photos.

I knew I should have asked before I sent out the publication stuff. :(

Oh well I learn so much from here. Next time 9x6 etc....

For this time its white borders around the pics, along with using Janices idea of the background for some.

If I do need to crop pics in future should I always think Print - and do it in a good ratio? Is that what you would do?

You have to constantly think of work flow the more time you spend poncing around the less time you have to yourself or taking photos...Ian

Supply your prints in 9x6 and 12x8 or all the variants of that format and you don't have to worry about cropping. You do have to have a good look around that viewfnder before you press the button because wysiwyg.

Colab do prints in 3:2 format. I used them for many years and can heartily recommend the quality of their work.

agree with CT here
i've had some cracking 9x6's and 12x8's done by them  after they called me and said that would be a better option than the size I ordered.

top guys are colab.
