so now we have another two stupid britons (lower case) being held in Iran for spying
why are people so dumb, in a few days there family will want the UK government to intervene and spend millions getting them freed!

Especially as the government in Iran is not likely to look favourably on someone who on social media talked about the rewards of meeting incredible people, hearing their stories.

I can see the attraction of riding around the world (even if I don't have that sort of wanderlust myself) but I would have accepted that it's impossible to do safely at the moment (overland is either Russia or Iran...) and taken a boat from Arabia to India to avoid the trouble spots. From what I've seen, EVERYONE apart from the couple themselves was telling them not to be stupid. Harsh as it may seem, let them sort themselves out!
 
A friend of mine did it in an expedition-kitted Landrover twenty years ago went overland via Turkey, had a 4 day transit visa and carnet to get to Pakistan, but then couldn't enter Pakistan due to a coup, so had an even harder quicker journey back to Turkey while his visa was valid. He did however wisely have a Turkish Farsi-speaking guide with him for that part of the journey, and still its was very risky and scary.
He shipped the LR via container to West Australia and drove around there instead.
 
Looks like a case of social media fame that went wrong " Oh look at us we are in Iran " Doh!!!!!

They probably planned to visit Afghanistan after Iran...

There's been a lot of coverage about foreigners being held in Iran for years, even one if their own..Nazazin Zhagari-Ratcliffe Iranian/British...was held for six years after a visit to her parents so they could see their grandchildren. The regime has amongst the world's worst human rights record . Seems friends urged them not to go so, what on earth is it that blocks out all this . It's hard to believe that people are so naïve ..possibly ,so stupid. The idiots could cause all sorts of problems for our government.

Absolutely no sense in going there even for an "adventure", at least Boris is no longer likely to make matters worse for them.
 
I feel for them but it's unlikely they will escape for years, just another bargaining chip to be brought out when useful.

You might think that but they will be heroes to some. . .

There's an ongoing case, 3 men allegedly burgled a farm last May, and the farmer allegedly shot one of them dead and wounded another.

The deceased alleged burglar is one Marcus Smith, see this gofundme page, which so far has raised over £14K

I expect there will be fundraising, campaigns and eventually their local MP will raise the matter in the commons.
 
Since October last year, all flights to Europe from Iran were stopped due to sanctions imposed on Iran by Europe. I think given the tensions between Iran and Israel, it is now a very dangerous time for tourists or even those who have relatives in Iran, to visit the country. I last visited in 2018 and it was fine.
