What sync cable for 40D and 580ex mk2?

Yes
I've got a 580ex mk2 on the way and I'd like to use it off-camera, I understand I can use a pc sync cable between my 40D and the 580ex, albeit a slightly unorthodox male to male cable? Can someone link me to where I can get one quite quickly? Don't want to accidentally buy the wrong one.

Thanks in advance!
Rich

Edit - Just to say, I already have the corded off-camera shoe which I used to use on my 350D with the 430ex, but I find it not long enough and the cord always pulling on the camera/flash which became a nuisance. So I'd rather use the pc sync connection I have available on the 40D/580ex combo. Thanks again!

Won't you use lose TTL with a PC cord?

Not sure about TTL. I'd survive if I had to control the outputs manually though I think.

Judging by the image of the sync cable posted by cherryrig, it appears I need a cable with the connection on the left on both ends. My 580 showed up this morning and the sync connector is the same as the one on the 40D.

Will carry on searching for the elusive cable and report back if I find anything. If anyone else has experience already please share!

Aha, but that's another of those coiled cables like the off-camera shoe cord that pulls my light stands over. :bonk:

In the end I found a seller on ebay selling 30cm male-male cables which I'll daisychain with a conventional 5m male-female cable for a slightly unelegant but effective solution. Hopefully arrive tomorrow!

Buy the cheapest nastiest off camera shoe cord you can find and extend the cables using pc network cable and that will give you e-ttl which you will lose completely with a pc sync cable.

hahaha, i knew it would be on google somewhere.

extending off camera cable

:)

Eek, that looks a bit too technical for me haha, I just know I'd completely mess it up.

My male-male and male-female sync cables arrived but then I found out that the 580ex mk2 won't work as a wireless master when connected via the PC socket rather than hotshoe. So i've now had to get a hotshoe adapter with PC socket! Things just keep getting more complicated. Why did Canon not let the 580ex function as a master when connected by the PC socket? My solution is getting more and more unelegant by the minute!

Edit - Oh no, i've bought the wrong hotshoe adapter. I've got an adapter for the hotshoe of the camera rather than the flash. Doh. At least I can use it on my 350D so it now has a PC socket. Can anyone link me to the correct adapter for the hotshoe of a flash please!

Bumpy - Can someone link me to the correct hotshoe adapter I'd need to put on the 580ex, I've still yet to find one. :'( Many thanks to anyone who can help.

I must have lost the plot here because the 580EX II has a PC terminal (see page 4 of the manual), as well as its own hotshoe (obviously), so what sort of adapter do you want for the flash gun?

Are you saying you want a PC-hotshoe adapter to fool the 580EX II into thinking it has been fired by the hotshoe rather than the sync cable, and that by doing that you will be able to make the 580EX II act as a wireless master? If so, I'd be surprised if that would work any better than a direct connection straight to the builtin PC socket.

Yes, that's precisely what I want, according to various discussions it's meant to be the only way to have the 580ex work as a wireless master if you want to use a pc sync cable.

Edit - whoops, you replied whilst I was typing. I'm referring to your first post about tricking the 580ex into triggering from its hotshoe. :)

Ah, I think that first link should be the one I need. Well, I assume it's for the flashes hotshoe as it mentions the 580/550/430ex. I made the mistake of buying a hotshoe adapter for the camera's hotshoe before, but at least I can use that on my 350D.

Thanks!

Edit - Reading the description i've confused myself again, it states; 'This adapter is designed for camera that does not have PC sync socket.', can anyone confirm whether or not this is for the hotshoe on the speedlite?

Edit 2 - Aha, after more googling I think i've definitely found what I need here http://www.nikon2you.com/product_info.php?products_id=318
