I have a 430 and a 600 and they have worked with any Canon I owned, including the G10 and G16 compacts.

However, if you are looking at the cheap ones from the east, many seem to be doubtful, like zoom not working properly (if at all) or the metering not working as expected.

Might the body be faulty?

Might well be, but the OP did not say what did not work, ie didn't flash or features.

Could well have been damaged by trying a non-compatible flash too.

Or perhaps they haven't brought one yet at all & are trying to make sure they get one that works. (Any recent Canon flash should be fine)

They may not have bought, but "I can’t find any that work" does sound like it needs elaborating on as suggested.

The discussion the other day about the 550 flash probably says all that can be said until there is more information :)

Isn’t this one of the later Canon cameras they’ve done away with the centre pin and so they’ll only work with genuine canon flashes?

If that’s the case, I’d try any genuine Canon ETTL II flash, they’d have to have built in some backward compatibility.

See if you can borrow one before shelling out though.

And as above, it’ll help to tell us what you have tried.

I think it is, goo point :)

There's at least one Godox that works after a firmware update...

From Petapixel (in 2019):

On April 29th, just 5 days after Andrew’s video came out, Godox announced new firmware updates for the V860IIC, X1T-C, TT350C, and V350C that make them compatible with Canon’s center-pin-less hotshoes
