what software for raw

hi guys i introduced my self 2 weeks ago i just bought my first dslr its an older model nikon d40x i thought it would be a decent starter kit what i want to know is when i got the camera it was set for jpeg fine pictures i moved it to neff raw to see if it would make any difference to my pics but they dont open up on my computer i have the nikon dx software and they wont open with that either any ideas please what other software i need thanks in advance justin :bang::bang:

Try this and make sure to download the correct version (32 or 64 bit) if you are a windows user.

Hi Welcome to TP.

Please can you provide a bit more info on your system. What operating system are you using?

I use lightroom to do my editing, but there may be free ones available. Also I would have thought that the Nikon software should open it but never used it so cannot confirm.

You'll need the correct codec for Windows too to be able to view your raw files...

Choose 32 bit or 64 bit (x86) as per your flavour of Windows.

download viewnx from nikon, supports all flavours of nikon raw, try digiKam as an alternative to lightroom, supports most raw formats and adobe dng, and works almost like lightroom.
