So If I focus and press the shutter i get one frame rate.. If I pre focus then press the shutter i get a faster frame rate....

Is this the lens ate fault ?

1dx 2 and 3 with older lens and moreso with the mk3 yes it has faster frame but you need to change modes

Could be the autofocus settings? Eg only shoot when focused would make it slower everything else being the same.

That was my second thought...

In the AF settings, you can set the priority for 1st and second shot iirc. It's been a while since I played with those, but if the second shot is set to focus or focus/release things can slow down waiting for focus confirmation.

@TimHughes @toohuge

Yeagh I though of that I already have second set to -2 as i do a lot of work in the dark at high iso.. if first shot is in focus at 16 frames a secodn i dont see any need for the camera to check second shot is in focus and your right it makes a big difference to FPS but only at high iso.. it makes no noticable difference in decent light..

also anti flicker is off..

So out all day a lot more experminting and.... the higher the fstop the slower the shutter speed.... f2.8 and the shutter flies... f5 and its slows... f8 even slower

swapped cameras and shot same lens and no problem so thinking its the camera at fault :(

Do you mean frame rate (fps)???

I have always thought the way these cameras work - closing and opening the aperture each time would slow frame rate as the aperture decrease (f number increases) simply as there’s more time required for the blades to open /close.
Glad you tested it on another body - at least that eliminated….. it does sound body specific then, unless one of your bodies locks exposure in a burst (I think there’s an option for that) as that’ll lock the aperture and won’t need to open / close for metering.

Haa I will look at that to see if it effect.... Last experiment to do is factory reset and try... i will be trying that later this aft to eliminate my many settings changes.. although they shouldnt be much different between cameras

Can you save your settings before a factory reset? Might save some time later.

of course :) Although I ahve found in the past they dont always load again :(

Not ideal - sometimes! Is it a body problem or a card/data one? If the latter, maybe a backup or 2 would work?

Thanks I hadnt seen that... So nothing wrong wiht my camera.. just a combination of old lens and new camera... Trouble is... its a perect combination for picture quality.. absoloutly superb... and i dont have any problems wiht a 1dx.. shutter flies no matter what...1dx2 not so much hardly noticable slow down.. . but 1dx3 and a 400 2.8 mk1 it noticably slows down if i go f4 or above and or when i keep the BBF pressed and shoot both will slow the shutter speed FPS

wish i had known this beforehand.. i am not upgraded my glass when they produce such fantastic quality

thanks for the link @TimHughes ... problem still there but at least i know now :)
