How do I know what size lens hood I need for my 55-250mm

Do you just mean the diameter of the fitting ?

or do you mean the shape and size of the hood itself ?

Check the Canon website and it will well you. A lot of lenses need specific lens hoods, even if they are the same size as others.

It's a Canon ET-60

You can buy a generic one though.

Just remember the front element rotates on that lens so go for a round one rather than a petal type.

As above the lens hood you require for your 55-250 (presume its the Canon one) is the ET-60, which is a round hood, not a petal one.

This is an easy way to spot the idiots in a crowd I saw loads of people with 55-250's and petal hoods at brands hatch earlier this year! Did make me giggle.

If you have the box the lens came in it should tell you on that, or just Google it.
