I'm using a Nikon d3100 & have taken several photo I want to display on my wall, but not sure how big of canvas I can display on? I shoot in raw at the biggest picture setting.
This is all about viewing distance, so close-up on a small print you typically print at 300dpi but from a few feet away you can't see that much detail so its a waste printing at 300dpi for something that will go on a wall
I used to sell a lot of kids' portraits on canvas at just 150 dpi, and I once had a big canvas at just 70dpi which is perfectly fine from the sort of distance you look at wall art
Your D3100 I believe has 4688 pixels on the longest side, so at 300 dpi (dots per inch) that'd be 4688 / 30 = 15.6 inch
But at 100 dpi it'd be 4688 / 100 = 46.9 inches or in other words... pretty damn big
So unless you want something even bigger than 40-50 inches on the longest side then kestral (while joking) was correct, as big as you want and it'll be fine
Just to reiterate the above, the next time you're in a department store, wander close to those gorgeous posters they have up. You'll be appalled to see the 5mm pixels that make up the beautiful sharp images (you usually see from 10 feet away)
