What should I consider next

I'm very new to photography but would like to get serious about it as i'm enjoying it so much. I currently have a Nikon D40 18-55mm kit lens, 55-200mm, nikon sb400 flash and a tripod.

Some friends have seen some of my pics and have asked me as a favour to do some pictures for them in future such as weddings (in addition to a pro) and also as I would like some portrait equipent this is something they would like also.

What would you recommend I buy next, i'm always out and about experimenting and have even asked a couple of people if I can take some pics at their wedding for experience.

Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.
 
Depends on budget. Ideally a d90 or d300, sb600 flash, 2.8 glass...

A 50mm would be ideal I guess.
 
what do you like shooting, if you love landscapes what about a really good tripod and some filters. For portraits a flash with manual power control and some triggers, sports a fast tele, music a fast prime?
Maybe a body with better noise handling and built in AF motor

What aspect of your photography do you currently enjoy most and where do you feel your kit is limiting you?
 
This isn't my field, but you will certainly need some faster glass for taking photos indoors at a wedding. A 50mm f1.8 is always a useful lens to have, but for a weding you will need something a little wider than that for the groups and maybe 70-200mm f2.8 for the candid shots. I'm sure you will get plenty of advice. Good luck!
 
wow, didnt expect so many replies so quickly. Im a student so money is always quite tight but if I could gain some experience and in the long run start to make a little back from it whilst at uni then i suppose it would be a good investment.

I would like to do weddings as a 2nd and do some portraits for friends and family but also my personal interest is automotive and motorsport. I was looking at the D90 and i'm very tempted now.
 
a d90 has the motor in right - that leads nicely on to a cheap 50mm for you (a great buy I loved mine to bits - so much so I got a less cheap 50mm). Also will improve iso and AF and all sorts of other bits ;)
 
although the most common call is always to buy glass first, i reckon id upgrade the cam in your case. A d90 with a 50 1.8 would give you great quality albeit quite limiting in focal length. But a 24-70 2.8 or a 70-200 2.8, which would be your ideal wedding glass throw your budget like mad.
The d90 gives you a decent body to build your lens collection up on, and also the creative lighting system makes it easy to get your flash off camera.
 
thankyou for the advice, i've decided to save a bit and get the d90, it comes with the 18-105vr which will be ok for some of the automotive I want to do. Then i'll start looking at other lenses.
 
If you were to get something along the lines of a Nikon 60mm f2.8 it would do for both portraits and macro, and its sharp, very sharp. Also not a bad focal length for a walkabout lens.
