It's all a bit of a compromise really, the darker the shade, the more you can do in terms of creativity, and the more saturated the colours that you can get. But, darker shades also need more lighting power...
Of course, the greater the distance from frontal lights to the background, the darker it will photograph anyway.

That price seems a bit high to me though.

Cheers, I'm shopping around just now but as long as I know what shade to roughly look for. I have a big list of goodies on order for more practice with studio photography.
 
I've just bought storm grey and it seems alright, maybe a bit lighter than I'd hope but should be alright. Need to have a proper play to see what I can do with it.
