Hi,

I'm a newbie here with studio light. I'd ordered 2 ezy-softboxes and it is on the way. While so, I would like to find out what is the best setting I should set to my SB-800 and SB-600. My CLS commander is D90. In my mind I thought of setting the flashgun mode to M since I question about TTL setting as the flashgun is inside the softbox, how would it know the subject distance and hence get the good output?

Thanks in advance.

I personally have no idea how CLS works since I dont shoot Nikon I'm afraid - However you could always shoot with them on manual, its a nice learning curve you will enjoy :)

Personally I would try it on cls first, as it is the camera that works out the power of the flash when in ittl and not the flash.

With CLS the flash gives out a brief flash when you press the button prior to the shutter on the camera opening to which the light setting is worked out. It all happens very quickly. I've used my SB900 and SB600 and the D700 as a commander. Both flash units had Lumiquest softboxes on and worked fine using TTL.

Thanks for the advice. I'll try it out tonight and workout which setting is best for the softbox.

Use manual (set from the commander menu on the camera) and experiment. Feedback is instant with digital and you'll soon have a great understanding of your equipment and what kind of results the various settings will get you.
