So I'm planning on giving my PC a make over with some new RAM and a SSD. But what sizes do i need? I have 4 slots for RAM and i can have a maximum of 32gb should i need it. But do i? Will i notice a difference over 16 or is that plenty? I don't do alot in PS but i do do all my editing in Lr. Currently running 6gb (4 & 2) from stock.

As for SSD's, what size do i need to be able to run W8.1, Lr and PS from it? I will probably store my pics on the 1TB hard drive that is currently being used (after a full format).

Any help much appreciated!

Thanks.

16gb RAM should be fine for most, if you get 2x8 modules you can always add more later if you find you're running low. LR never really used to use much RAM anyway, it was always more CPU and disk speed dependant (up to at least LR5).

SSD is a bit more subjective. my home editing machine has 128gb as the OS and apps drive but a second 128gb as a catalogue/ps scratch/working files drive. then i move off onto slower large storage once editing is complete. so in short 256gb is probably okay here.

I've put a 240GB Sandisk Extreme Pro SSD in my machine. More than enough for Windows 10, Adobe CC (and some games, ahem), and they're under £100 with a 10 year guarantee.

And yeah, 16gb of fast dual channel ram will be plenty.

I agree. Get a match pair of 8Gb in the primary slots and move the existing 4 and two to the other slots. You may as well use them and go for 22GB ram :)

A 256GB ssd for OS and apps will be fine. Especially with the 1TB as a secondary drive.

I would adapt the workflow a little and import new projects into the SSD and once complete move it to the other drive. You will notice the difference in reading the photos.

Have fun

Cheers mate, sounds good! I may be back to ask some more questions later.

just be a little careful mixing RAM, some dont play nice together. Also check the speeds, any mismatching speeds will automatically slow the faster sticks to match the slower ones etc

True, although if you keep matched pairs together you should be ok and not notice the difference.

Well the computer came with a 4 and a 2 which i thought was odd but it's took me a while to get around to upgrading it and wasn't set on still using the existing RAM anyway.
