What Nikon?

Looking to upgrade my Nikon D40x however unsure of which camera would be best to go for? Can't afford the D3S unfortunalty so considering the D700, D800 or possibly the D600, not too keen on the D300s though.

As you've put this in sport - a Nikon D700 + Grip + extra geniune battery second hand would be a good bet. Between £900-£1200 dependant on condition. I use this set up as a second body and it does the job.
