Last year I took some photos of a friend of mine while he was kite surfing and I was killing time waiting for him to come in.

Not brilliant to my eyes, but he wants me to come along and do a proper job in a few weeks.

Since I only have a Nikon D90/18-70mm lens combo I figure I need to hire something with a longer reach to get the shots that I want and was thinking of something like the AF 80-200mm f2.8 like this:

Is something like this going to suitable do you think? I've never used a lens of this size - is there any special technique required.

Cheers

I guess if he is going to be floating about out on the water you may need something a bit longer like the 200-400 or 400 with a tc. As for technique cant really help with that, but, monopod might be beneficial.

I'd def be looking at a zoom for versatility, so you can do beach/ shoreline shots and water shots without swapping glass. The surfers near me don't go *that* far out so 200mm should be long enough, and remember field of view is going to be critical to ensure you don't start cropping out their sails - to me that's the key consideration.

If it were me I'd look at 70-200 maybe with a TC to extend the reach for close ups. You won't need it to be fast glass for DoF considerations or lighting conditions but you'll benefit in IQ if it is.

Actually scratch what I just said.....300 yeah that should be ok, you'll get the kite's in hopefully with that too. Something like the 200-400 might be better though if you can afford it.
