Yes
I currently have a Nikon D80, with 3 lenses:
105mm sigma macro,
50 mm 1.4 nikon and
18-200 VR Nikon
and a macro flash.

I am trying to decide what my next steps are, as to be honest the D80 is showing its age a bit, esp in terms of iso etc.

I guess my choices are D90, D300s, D700 (but need new lenses) or wait for a new Nikon D95 etc.

What would your advice be to me? I am just a keen amateur snapper with no real areas of passion (although the thought of a good macro photo appeals to me)

I guess I'd be looking at spending 1k max on the body (Second hand is fine by me)

Any comments from wiser people than me would be great.

I have a D80 and three lenses too...a D90 is very tempting, but I think I'll wait until the next version is released. Seeing as I like wildlife photography, I'm starting to think I'd be better off sticking with a DX sensor rather than FX. I can't really afford a D700 anyway xD

Boopop - or I hold off for a D100 - possibly the best idea yet :) The D700 is a nice idea but the lack of lens compatibility is a bit of a no-no... I don't suppose any of us know when the D100 is due for release?

Sorry to kinda hijack. But the D100 would be kind of a step back from a D80 in many peoples eyes. Linky ;):D

I was thinking that too xD The D700 is compatible with all DX lenses, it's just it's not worth having a D700 if the majority of the lenses you use are DX instead of FX.

Sorry, when I said D100, I meant to say the next incarnation of the D70/80/90 range, rather than the actual D100 which is already out there. Oops! I meant the next D90 upgrade... Sorry!

D700 is compatible with DX lenses but works in crop mode at circa 5 megapixels only. The only DX lens is the 18-200 - the others will be fine. D100 was introduced in 2002 I think!

Interesting awp - thanks for the info. All the same, with upto 1k in the bank what would you do?!

IMHO if you can afford only 1k for now it is better to wait and to save more. This year we will see either the upgrade of D90, that will fit in your budget, or D400 that will cost more but probablly will be the ultimate DX camera, with many capabilities inherited from D300s but with a new and improved sensor with much better ISO performance. Last but not least possibility... we will see a D700x or a D800 that will make used D700 to become very affordable... Definitely it deserve to wait a little bit.

Well, 1.5k seems to be a reasonable ammount. With this much you can get hopefully the follower of D90 and a fast lens like Tamron 17-50mm/f2.8, or a D400, or a used copy of D700 after the release of D700X(s) or D800.

None of these rumoured Nikon bodies exist yet and may not for a while - if ever. If you keep waiting for the latest you may never buy!

That's true but if we look at Nikon's cycle of production for new bodies we see a pattern... in this regard, we do not know for sure what and when we will see next body on the market but the high probability is to see one of these rumored cameras. Last year Nikon was active on the extremes (low end and high end), with D3000, D5000 and D3s. This year we will (99%) see something in the middle. IMHO we will see at least one DX, either an upgrade to D90 or a replacement for D300 and a full frame camera that either will improve or will replace D700. Nikon cann't stay passive when competition is active... that is for sure.

I know but if hadn't bought the D3 bodies and waited for the D3s I might well have been out of business! I've taken 1,000s of shots with the D3 that were almost impossible before it arrived.

I'm in a similar position to Jonty here.

I like the idea of the D300s but in all fairness I get the feeling that it's possible just me getting the better bit of kit because I can, not necessarily because it's better for me. I have heard people say the D90 is a great bit of kit, and for the lesser cost, it quite probably is the sensible option. Inside I look and think to myself "I Want the D300s"

Is this a case of heart over head?

I'm pretty sure neither will make me a better photographer and I should try using the D50 more. Hmmmmm......

It's all great kit in the right hands! You have to decide what it is you can't do now - and what would make it happen.
