Sorry to bore you all with this, i'm sure every newbie posts the same questions.
I have just ordered a Sigma AF 70-300mm f4-56 DG APO Macro lens for £158.00 to go with my new Canon EOS 450d.

Since then i have seen a Canon EFS 55-250mm f4-5.6 IS USM lens for £200.00.

Has anyone got any opinions on which to go for and does the Image Stabiliser really make that much difference to me.

Thanks for your time.

But if you've ordered a lens, isn't it too late.

Not if he's ordered it online, the distance selling regulations give you 7 days to return it if you're not happy with it

Even if you brought it physically you can try handing back, I've done it a few times.......

jsut claim it not fit for purpose, say its too soft or something!

John, I haven't used the sigma lens you mention, but I've been using the Canon 55-250 IS lens for a year now and it is a stunning lens for the price. The IS works really well, in the photography I take (motorsport).

If the use is mainly for macro use, then image stablisation just wouldn't come into question, using it for this purpose would require a tripod to lock the camera and lens as macro work requires very exacting adjustments. If the main reason is for general photography then yes image stablisation is always preferable .

The distance selling regs I believe will only allow you to return goods if they are faulty or not as described. same as a shop purchase.

Just saying that one changed ones mind for whatever reason is not a reason for returning goods.
