My God, I'm still waiting for my Nikkor 18-200 VR!! I ordered on the 3rd January. I phoned Warehouse Express the other day and they said they are still having supply troubles and to sit tight but now i'm thinking that I really want to get a cheaper alterative to push me on. I mean a few weeks wait is ok and i can even stand a few months but this is getting ridiculous now.

So, given that at the moment I have a borrowed 50mm 1.8 prime for my brand new Nikon D50 and that I have the 18-200 VR coming (eventually) what lenses do you recomend? I was looking at getting something like a Tamron AF SP 11-18mm in the future to complement the Nikkor but for the time being as a stop gap i'm looking at something cheap and in the 70-300 mark, maybe even 28-300. The group test in Digital Photo this month sugests the Tamron or the Sigma APO. Does anyone have any comment on either of those? Can anyone suggest maybe a different focal legnth and give me a reason why?

As I said this will be a stop gap to fill the void at the moment and will eventually act as a trade in on a big long prime but your recomendations are both greatly appreciated and hotly awaited!! :whistle2:

the sigma 70-300 apo dg is well regarded, i have one and i'm very pleased with it, i get sharp enough pics at 300mm at f8 and even better at 200mm. i'm sure the many other people on here that have the same lens will pop in and also tell you how good it is for the money.

i'm thinking of the nikon 28-200 too as its very light, small, well reviewed and would suit me for a travel lens as they go for under £140 secondhand but good condition.

as you are considering the 11-18 tamron id also think about the sigma 10-20, theres a few of us here that use it, myself included and everyone seems very happy with it :)

I got the Sigma 70-300mm apo macro, even in my novice hands its a very good lens for the money, going for around £140-£160 For a brand spanker.
