Hi all, I am looking to get some 100mm ND filters and I'm not sure what to get. I'm thinking of getting a 2 stop soft GND and a 3 stop soft GND with a 3 stop full ND.

Basically I'm asking is what do you guys use the most?

I already have a couple of SRB screw in ND filters, a 6 & 10 stop grades, so I don't need these straight away & I have a NISI filter holder and polarizer. Don't want to waste my hard earned & I'm looking to get more over time, I would just welcome some guidance as to a starting point so any advise would be welcome.

Thanks

Doug

I have a set of 0.6 and 0.9 soft, medium and hard grads and use them all. (0.6 = 2 stops, 0.9 = 3 stops)
ND's I have 4 stop, 6 stop and 10 stop. 4 and 6 being used the most.

If you have a crop sensor I wouldn't get soft grads as you won't get the benefits of the gradation.

Hi Elliott

Thanks for the info, I have a EOS70D so yes a crop sensor, would you recommend getting medium grads if I wont get much of a gradation with the soft ones?

That's the general consensus, and is one of the reasons why Lee introduced the medium and very hard grads.

I'd get the Medium and hard grads and if you do seascapes with a hard horizon line, you can look at the very hard grads. Of course this assumes you are looking at Lee filters. I don't know what gradations the other manufacturers have.

I am looking to do more landscapes than seascapes as I live too far from the coast, but I'm off to the Yorkshire Dales on hols and would like to have some filters with me.

Thanks for the advice, I will look into this but as decent filters are quite expensive I just want to get the right ones.
