Hi all, just a quick thread on some advice for what lens to purchase next.

I look through the for sale section on here and see multiple lenses that I think I could buy and use :bonk:

Really interested in portrait and car photography, have a kit lens, tele-photo and the prime 50mm 1.8 and love the Dof that it can achieve.

I know the question is vague but what do people recomend next? I really want to start taking my photography more seriously.

Possibles I have looked at are f1.4 Prime, F4 Telephoto......

I have a Canon EOS 450D and would prefer to buy 2nd hand :D

Cheers

Scott

Edit: had a look at some potential lenses

Rite guys have had a look into potential lenses and have come up with this list:

Tamron AF 17-50mm F2.8 XR Di II LD Aspherical (IF) or the 17-70mm f/2.8-4 DC Macro Lens Canon AFD

Would be used in place of my 50mm prime as a walk about lens.

Focal lengths of above 70/80mm (on a full frame) are generally said to be pleasing for portrait work. If you want to throw the background out of focus which is generally desirable then a fast lens would give you better results.

Canon do 50mm and 60mm macro lenses which on your body would work well but alas I do not have access to the for sale section on here so I can't advise you what might be suitable.

What sort of budget were you thinking?

Depends on how much you have to spend. I've got a 100 2.8 L Macro which I use very successfully as a portrait lens as well as the obvious macro. I use it on both my 7D and 5D2 and IMO it's better for macro on the 7D but better for portraits on the 5D2, although it does both very well on both bodies. If 100mm is to long then you have a choice of 35,50 or 85 primes whichever suits your style most. And there's always the 70-200 f4 L which is pin sharp or the 24-105 f4 L which is also great on both bodies as long as you don't plan any WA.

Cheers for the replies guys, budget wise would be £400 max.

I thought about a 35mm Prime but thought that would be too close to what I already haev, 100mm 2.8 Macro? I'll have a look into them.

the 70-200mm F4, is it not 600+?

Having been in a similar position a while ago, I went for a Tamron 17-50 f2.8. Lovely versatile fast lens for portrait stuff, and you can pick one up for <£200. Blows the Canon kit 18-55 lens out the water for image quality.
Be aware there is a VC version that is more expensive and generally reviewed as having worse IQ, but having not tried one I couldn't confirm that.
Oh, and it's not a macro. Closest focal length is around 10" I think. Which is pretty decent, but not macro.

I picked up a used 70-200 F/4 on Saturday for £370. It was in really good condition.

Took a few shots with it this week but kept on reading about how much better optically the 70-200 F/4 IS was so I changed it over yesterday to the IS model and have to say it is a much better lens but at more than twice the cost. Am not saying the cheaper lens was bad, just that the IS version is better.

Cheers Andy I'll look into the Tamron lens, no issues with it working on a Canon? Sure someone said they can be a bit tempermental with non Canon lenses.

Nice one Tim, I'll keep an eye out but double thats beyond me at the minute, I'll keep an eye out though.

How much to kit lenses get sold for second hand out of interest?

Other than a macro lens it sounds like you have bases covered.

The options would be upgrade the kit lens/tele lens to Canon f4 L range or get a macro lens. I'd normally suggest Canon 100mm, but think it may be too long for portraits on a cropped sensor.

Cheers Lewis, just considering the Tamron AF 17-50mm F2.8 XR Di II LD Aspherical (IF) or the 17-70mm f/2.8-4 DC Macro Lens Canon AFD, it would be used as the walkabout lens and if it was good enough I would probably get rid of my kit lens to free up cash

Anyone able to help me decide which one of these lenses?

Tamron AF 17-50mm F2.8 XR Di II LD Aspherical (IF) or the 17-70mm f/2.8-4 DC Macro Lens Canon AFD

I'm thinking more the Tamron, but 2nd opinion would be great folks
