Hi there i'am going for a car contest photography.
I'am considering to rent a lens. maybe 2 lens.

There would be drifting and models to shoot at.
I would like your kind advise on what lens must i use?

I'am using a Nikon D40 but i tot of renting a D90

Thanks for your help!

By the sounds of it a 70-200 F2.8 and 1 1.4x convertor will do what you described.

Which event are you going to?

Depends on how close you are to the action - assuming 'normal' Press-access, then a 70-200 f/2.8 would probably do for the 'drifting' - if further away, then a 300 f/2.8 or a 2x converter (bearing in mind the loss of light using a doubler will result in 'losing' an f-stop or so) might be needed...

For the 'model' shots then any standard zoom will do, again assuming you have reasonable access and can get close-in...

Hi thanks so much i think i will be getting a
Nikon 70-200mm f2.8 VR AFS (FX) then!

I'll be joining FASTCLICK 2009. Its a challenge for the enthusiasts to compete in a photo taking competition which will be judged based on the best motion and static photos taken on event day in their respective categories.

Venue: Marina Leisure Club (formerly known as Punggol Marina)
Date of event: ROUND 4 NOVEMBER 21-22, 2009
Singapore

There would be Gymkhana, drifting demos and models.

So how about the model lens and some closeup car pics?
I think of getting a
Nikon 14-24mm f2.8 AFS (FX)

Yes i think i will be getting a press access because its a paid contest.
Does Nikon 14-24mm f2.8 AFS (FX) do good for the car models and car pics?

Thanks for your reply Arkady :)

14-24 will be OK for static cars, but won't be too flattering for models, as wide angle lenses tend to produce some distortion.

For models the 70-200 will probably be a good bet.

What lenses do you have already?

14-24 is a bit wide - even on FX - I'd go for a 17-35 f/2.8 as a standard lens and the 70-200 for everything else
maybe a 24-80 f/2.8 or 28-80 f/2.8 if you need something to bridge the gap - or maybe a 50mm f/1.4...
I have all of the above and they're all useful to a degree...

Yes i'am going to get the 70-200 but i need a 2nd lens i'am not sure if my 18-70mm would be much use.

Well i have the standard lens 18-55mm and also 18-70mm

I have a D40 but my company have a D40X and a D70 which i could borrowed easily

Thanks

Oh gosh so many! Can you just name me 1 for the cars (non drifting)
I'am really going for the 70-200 for the drifting and car models

:)

Oh yeah guys i forgot to tell you this. Photo editing is not allowed. I need to submit my memory card at the end of the contest. Thats why i need a goooodd lens to recommend. Because normally i just took using 18-55 and edit it at home :)

D40 + 18-55 lens pop up flash
Thats it!

70-200 for the drifting and a 24-80 for the models...

I'd agree, 24-70 for the action (the Nikon 24-70 is a lovely speedy focusing bit of glass) and 70-200 for the portraiture would be my weapons of choice - that and a decent flash.

Drifting tends to look better shot quite wide to catch smoke trails and the like, the more normal style of getting tight into the action with a long telephoto doesn't work quite so well IMHO.

The only other tip you might like to try is to go really wide with a D700/D3 and something like the 17-35.... but be careful with the crazy wide angle shots of motorsport, as it has a nasty habbit of sucking you right into dangerous places without you noticing as you stare through the viewfinder!

Good luck!

PS without some processing the shots are going to look pretty dull - drifting is one of those subjects that takes really well to some heavy handed PP'ing - normal photos are going to look a bit pants.

thanks so much for the tips! This is the first time i'am going to take photos with no editing done. Wish me luck!!

good luck

how about some custom settings in camera to boost contrast/saturation a bit for the dori shots and back to another custom setting for model and static shots. They could be submitted at the end (remember to change back and forth and also get some test shots done prior to committing to use!)

I think doing something a bit different from the norm would be eye catching (easier said than done!)and try to get the model's attention, as I'm sure there' will be a number of togs there doing the same thing. get some wacky hat or something generate some reactions and stuff and if you can get them to pose how you want then even better.
