what lens is best for race padocks of people

Yes you are right, on a crop body 24mm isn't wide enough for paddock/pitlane shots that get in whole cars.

Try something like a 17-50 instead.

Most guys I've seen in the paddock use the 16-35mm as this allows them to capture the people and the horse in the frame.

I use the 10-22 as a great wide lens and companion to my 24-105. It has the added advantage of approx 170 degrees of view at 10mm so you can get some semi fisheye type results if up close.

no, the 17-40L is a good lens, but its been available since 2003. Your post suggests its a new lens to market, or an update of the original.
