Hi All,

i'm after a bit of advice guys. In few weeks i'm off to Rome with my other half and thinking what lens shall i take with me. All it really needs to be is a walkabout lens mounted on my d750, but capable of some landscape shooting. I was thinking about renting 24-70 2.8 for a trip but i think it might be just a bit to bulky and heavy, as we will try to travel light. Any sugestions?

Many thanks!

Hi

What lens do you already have?

24-120 f/4? A bit smaller and lighter than the 24-70 f/2.8. Or maybe even travel really light and take an X30 or similar compact.

FF and travel light don't really go hand in hand but either a prime or even a Tamron 28-75 f/2.8 is small and light compared to the Nikon options and did me fine for Rome.

I would just take my Nikon AFS 28-300mm VR covers almost all eventualies or something a lot smaller and lighter is the Nikon AFG 28-200mm if you can find one ?

At the moment i only have 50mm 1.8.
Okay, in that case I would go with the suggestion above. The Nikon 24-70 is a heavy lens so not sure if you want to hire that lens.

Rome is one place you want a wide lens, doesn't need to be ultra wide (although that can be fun in the Vatican city) but things there are BIG and often packed close together and there are lots of cobbles and lines on the ground which lend themselves to wide angle shots. 28mm should be fine although 24mm a bit better.

I can't do mine justice, but @anibap really makes the 24-85mm sing on his travels around Europe. I think he's been to Rome, too.

Nice, light, and for the price you can pick one up, pretty darn sharp!

Thanks Steve. The 24-85 is perfect and my go to travel lens. It is light and sharp.

Mariusz, here's my Rome and Florence album threads I shared on TP.

Thanks for the suggestions guys, i will surely pick something now... @anibap - great sets of pics!!!

I'm going to Rome on Friday. My camera is DX (Nikon d90) and have a choice of 18-105 or Tokina 12-24. Based on my previous Rome trips I'll be using Tokina.

Well I'm just sitting in the "VIP" lounge at Madrid Airport about to fly home. (Yes I have one of those cards that lets me avoid the plebs).....Anyway........I brought my D7000 along with Sigma 17-50 f2.8, Nikkor 35mm and Sigma 10-20. I also brought my little Fuji X10. Over the week I've been here I've used the 35mm and the 10-20 precisely zero times.

I think that probably tells you what I think you need to know.

I would try out a 24 120 f4, decent range, much lighter and more compact than a 24 70.
