Yes
Im supposed to be attending a huge party shortly.
I am, for the most part working (nails) but am free to mingle later, so may ask my employer if I can take my camera.
As there will be a lot of press there already, hopefully she will say yes,.
However, the guests are not going to be the kind of peeps who will tolerate a lens shoved in their faces.

My cam is fullframe, my lenses are 50mm 1.4, 85mm 1.8, and 17-40mm f4. I have no flash.

Given all the above and that Im expecting it to be dark with flashing lights, is it worth my taking my camera, or should I just dig out the G5 for the odd candid?

Thoughts please.

You've nothing to lose - so take it! I'd go for the 85mm f1.8 - one of my favs.

Your camera will handle mid range ISO very well and both the 50mm and 85mm you have are great in low light - if the guests are not camera fans, i'd go with the SLR and 85mm as its less conspicuous than a flashing compact!

Take the 50mm along as well just in case you want a wider shot.

50mm 1.4 - especially on a full frame camera.

How low light are we talking about ? If its dark, then even at 3200 ISO, and F1.8 it's hard to get 1/30th without flash. Then all you'll get is blur when people move.

Fortunately, most parties even when 'dark' are poorly conceived if the guests are forever stumbling into each other and falling over. I think we can safely assume the light will be low / atmospheric ambient ;)

50MM 1.4 followed by 85 1.8 for me. Be careful with your focusing and you should get some great results!!
