What kit do you crave?...

Okay, we've all seen posts about the 'ideal' set-up and suchlike, but what one piece of kit do you A) crave to own that is within touching distance of your budget, and B) want because it will (in your head) make you a better photographer/offer you more options to improve your photography?

I thought I wanted a fisheye, something like a 10.5mm Nikon (and nearly did get that one for £330 in the classifieds section) but I'm now sure that I want a Nikon 12-24mm. I was toying with the idea of the Tokina version which is much cheaper but I like the quality of Nikon gear and I like the fact that my gear will be branded as all-Nikon (a bit of the snob factor there). Even if it means buying a used one to bring costs down I'm prepared for that just to own that lens.

Will it make me a better photographer? Although the easy answer is to say yes because psychology, any new kit makes you feel good, as far as offering me a much wider zoom range and adding to my existing lenses then i honestly do think that the money will be well spent. I often find myself doing a shoot at work and wishing I had something wider than my 18-70mm and the number of times that's happened in the past six months is enough to convince me it's the right course.

So what's everyone's most accessible, attainable 'goal' as far as kit goes?

A) D700
B) 600 F4 VR all singing all dancing jobbie.

Hmm, interesting question. For me at the moment I suppose it would have to be the 5D MkII, but will it make me a better photographer? I doubt it - it's more likely to show up my shortcomings in fine 21Mpixel detail!

New equipment doesn't make you a better photographer. It might open new areas of photography to you, or make it easier to get technically better quality photos. It also might encourage you to take more pictures which in the long-run will improve your photography by learning.

1) a super-wide like the sigma 10-22 as obviously it makes all landscape shots amazing.
2) 70-200 F2.8 as obviously it makes candid portraits amazing.

I would love and will get one of the two later this year for my birthday.

A 50mm or 35mm: for portrait shots. 80% of what I shoot is of my daughter so I think id get sharper shots with one.

A flash: Either the Nikon SB600 or 3rd party version. Not sure if 3rd party are as good. Ill have to compare when the time comes. All I know is I need to be able to bonce the flash to get rid of the awful shadows in lower light.

Good thread btw

I used to crave a Hassleblad, and various exotic lenses...but recently I have decided to immerse myself in what I have, and focus on TAKING the photos, and NOT the gear to take the photos.

For now, I am content with what I have.

Gary.

New MUCH FASTER computer for me

Specialman - I considered posting in this thread two of my last weekend's shots from the Lake District - one with Nikon's 10.5mm the other with their 12-24 - but I think that's just mean

D700, wont make me a better photographer but the colours sing in good light and it is awesome in low light, plus its faster than my fuji so the hope would be it would mean i can forget about the kit and just concentrate on taking photos

A 5" x 4" enlarger. Apart from that, I have everything I need/want (more than enough actually).

Me too. A top of the range Mac with top of the range Powerbook to go with it would be nice.

A 70-200 AF-S f:2.8 and a 12-24 f:2.8 would be nice too, but I'd get more out of better computing power at the moment.

I still really miss my Fuji S5 Pro for landscape work. Depends what you shoot...

The only thing I crave is a 600mm F4. Not even close to affording one though :(

70-200 f/2.8 for me. Have to be the Sigma version rather than the Nikon although the idea of VR on it does appeal!

Voigtlander 20MM 3.5 II has me drooling a bit.

Ditto!

though for me, it what I crave most is probably about £50k's worth of Leica (A leica MP is my dream):lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol:

but its probably never going to happen.

unless I start saving now.

then I might be able to get one on my death-bed:lol:

70-200 F2.8L IS USM
70-200 F4L IS USM (for when I want something lightweight)
Speedlite 580EX II

Thats it. I'd settle for just the 70-200 F4 IS USM tbh.

A) EF 300mm f/4 IS USM + 1.4X TC
B) 1Ds Mk111

Just took delivery of a brand spanking 2.4ghz Macbook Pro after my battered old G3 Powerbook took a fall off the kitchen table. It's amazing and has basically meant my usual machine, a 1.25ghz eMac, barely gets turned on these days. The MBP is an amazing piece of kit and one of the most useful bits of kits for my mobile photography.

Diddydave, it would be mean to do that but then again I'm past bearing grudges - show me some wideangle porn:)

As far as the responses go so far, it's amazing just how varied our technological 'cravings' are; from high-end cameras to flahshguns, there are obviously things that we feel we can afford soon(ish) that will make a big difference. f money was no object then a D3x kitted out with a 300mm f/2.8 and a 17-55mm f/2.8 would be on order but for that i'll have to sell a kidney or two... :)

White 2009 Best Nemisis HP 9m & 14m [weathe ris poor so not worht buying either yet]
im thinking outside the box :PPP

Wouldn't mind a Canon 24-70L but would be happy finding a 17-55 IS f2.8.

16-35 L
24-70 L
24-105 L
70-200 F2.8 IS L
24 L Mk2
50 L
85 L
135 L
300 F2.8 L
400 F4 L

... and an ice cream, as it's really hot outside now.

Canon 16-35 MkII is coming next - either when I have enough to buy one new (3 months) or a second hand one comes up in budget (immediately).

Doubt it will make me a better tog but it will give me the right equipment when I make the jump to FF in the next 6-12 months.
