No
metering mode do you favour?

It might depend on the different situiations etc, but i was just curious really.
And also learning about metering at the mo. :D
Be interesting to hear whcih one you favour over the rest and why?

Umm, the circle with the dot in, which one is that?

Probably called something like centre weighted, evaluative, matrix zoned adaptive metering.

More often though it's guess the exposure, then adjust off the histogram, if there's time.

Could be.

I know that just the dot is spot mode but which is what of the circle with dot and just circle.......:shrug:

Someone clever will be along in a mo. :D

Dazzajl if your on Canon then kmlc is right .

I tend to use center weighted ( that's the circle without the dot). Evaluative seems to get thrown by some unusual lighting conditions. However I try and check the histogram to make sure it done the job. I have also used spot on certain occasions. So many choices. I've even been known to get my Sekonic meter out in certain occasions

Why not spot meter all the time?? (Genuine question)

Yup, it's canon.

On my Mamiya it's a little more simple in as it's spot, or not.

I've been using evaluative since I got my first EOS, 15 odd years ago. It's high time I tried something different I guess.

For me, it's because any metering system, no matter how clever has to make some very broad based assumptions about what's in your frame to come up with an exposure value.

Once you're happy to interpret what the camera sees and work out where you need to correct, it matters little which mode you use in most cases.

When shooing with film, or more to the point without a histogram I do use a hand held spot meter as a rule.

Spot metering is ideal if you have an area of the subject that you want to get an exact exposure reading for.The problem is the spot area on most modern SLR's ( in fact all I think) is in the center of the viewfinder, so you have to select the area, lock the exposure then recompose You also have to interpret that information correctly not usual difficult to do. It just takes a little experience . This method is easier to do with subjects that tend not to move.

Give it a try and see what you think.
