Thought I would put it out there. What is everyones choice of exercise? ..........if they have one :D

I am getting tired of the gym and have started to jog outdoors now and am finding I enjoy it a lot more. I am going to cancel my gym membership this month so I am going to keep up the jogging and also introduce skipping into my routine. I have also heard about kettlebell training to tone up, anyone used these? I also want to start hiking again but unfortunately have no-one to go with

Any other interesting ideas for exercising? :)

Hi Vicky, this should be an interesting read once people respond.

Up until 5 years ago I was cycling 4-5 nights and one day a week putting in something like 300 miles a week after work. This came to an abrupt end when I met my other half as I ended up spending more time travelling up and down the country (by car).

I'm just starting to get back into cycling again in the past 6 months or so, and hope to get back into a routine that will allow for some cycling each week.

Walking is another exercise of choice, I love nothing more than being out in the country and walking a trail or two. Photography fits nicely with this too, so here's hoping for a good summer.

i like to do bicep curls with a tv remote in one hand and a bottle of stella in the other

Swimming was my main one in the past (2 miles plus 2 hours in the gym per day) recently I seem to be on the Krypto Exercise Plan

I used to love cycling! I found though it started to bulk my lower half a bit too much. I hope you start to get into your routine again, I remember the great feeling of cycling in the summer. Your right about walking being enjoyable too, I walk everywhere right now but it will be nice when the weather comes in.

 I've heard thats a most enjoyable exercise!

My latest thing is kettlebells. You can do a work out in 20 minutes and they fit in a small cupboard. The workout combines strength with cardio and because it doesn't take long I can do it most days.

I have two weights 12kg and 16kg and the wife uses an 8kg one.

I am definitely on the same exercise plan at this moment, the snow situation has completely knocked me off my stride!

I'm really interested in doing this but worried in case I do it wrong and injure myself. Can I ask how you knew how to use them correctly? None of the instructors at my gym seem to have a clue! Are they quite effective at cardio as well?

I used to Ice Skate (7days a week, seven hours a day) which was ace but many moons ago... Due to time constraints I have done absolutely no exercise whatsoever in way to long so getting back into photography is forcing me to get out and about so walking would ave to be the obvious one and laods of it!

Since having my camera I've spent my day off every week out and about from early doors until mid afternoon walking and shooting, not as energetic as some but defaintely a start :)

It's kidney trouble that's doing it for me - I kidney be bothered trapsing all the way down to Bellahouston

I was first introduced to them by a personal trainer. I registered on this site for the mailing list and got a free program with instructions and currently follow that.

You do 5 different excercises one after the other with between 10 and 15 reps. Then rest for a minute and repeat 4 times. All the excercised are quite dynamic so they are quite good cardio, squating down and then pressing the kettlebell above your head for example.

I play squash 4 times a week, and coach at the weekends on a voluntary basis! :D

I started gym a 13 months ago - I started on 10 mins level one exercise bike no resisitance level one and 10 mins tread mill no resistance.
13 months on I do

30 mins bike level 8 on random
30 mins tread level 8/9 speed 3.1 - 3.3
Introduced three weeks ago row machine 10 mins level 5
Inner thigh 100 at 45 kg
Outer thigh 100 at 45 kg
Over head weights 100 @ 15 - 22.5 kg
Curl things - 100 at 10 kg (just started these)

Takes me approx 2 hours I go twice a week

1 dalmation 3/4 long field walks of 45 mins

I am 4 stone down on my weight 13 months ago :)

Ohhh and I love the time out at the gym.

Combination of cycling (to/from work, 1 day a week, 10miles each way), 5-a-side football (I'm rubbish, but it's a good laugh and good exercise) and walking (either an hour in the evening around the village, or out in the hills at a weekend).

I can't do the gym, I just don't have the attention span for it.

So we have a lot of cyclists on here then! Ice skating sounds fun, the few times I have been i've been knackered!

Do housework and gardening count - oh and dog walking, weight lifting (lugging photo equipment around and lifting cameras)

Of course! Sounds like you are constantly on the move!

I find thats a problem too, sometimes when I am in the right mindset I can but I am enjoying the outdoors too much now!

:clap:Thats amazing, well done Wendy. You must feel fantastic. Thats a great routine you've got there too, I do love the selection of weights they have at my gym! And the dalmation made me laugh. A neighbour of mine has one and it normally looks like its taking her for a run :D

I've registered and going to read through it tonight. Do you reccomend getting one or two kettlebells? This may well be on their website! :D

I do weight training 5-7 days per week. 5 sets for each exercise starting at 20 reps, increasing weight on each set reps will reduce, aim for at least 10 reps on 5th set. 30 secs between each set. (Keeping the rest period down to 30 secs simulates a cardio workout in part).
Day One
Lat Pulldowns
Cable Rows
Bent over rows.
Dumbell Curl and Hammer Curl supersets.
Preacher Curl
Day Two
Crunches
Weighted side bends or side crunches
Hyper extensions for lower back. (Important to train the lower back to compensate for stronger abs or you will suffer alot of lower back pain)
Calf Raises
Day Three
Flat Bench Press
Flat Dumbell Flyes or Pec Deck
Incline Bench Press
Overhead Tricep Press
Tricep Pushdowns
Day Four
Crunches
Weighted side bends or side crunches
Hyper extensions for lower back.
Calf Raises
Day Five
Dumbell front shoulder raise, rotated and lowered to side
Shoulder press
Shrugs or side shoulder raises or upright row
Leg raise
Leg curl
Leg press, squats or deadlifts
Day Six
Crunches
Weighted side bends or side crunches
Hyper extensions for lower back.
Calf Raises
(Day Seven, repeat of Day One)
Each workout takes approx. 1 hr. Also throw in a couple of 25 minute sessions on a cross trainer on two of those days

Don't excersise as much as I use to as I have a back problem, I can't get it of the mattress in the mornings!! :D

A good walk once a week with my mates, usually 7-10 miles, depends where we go, crown green bowling 2/3 times a week in summer, car stays at home most of the time and walk most every where (catch the bus back though!!) I WILL be getting my bike out though this summer, I promise!!

Damned good daily walk - esp. where I don't meet people.

Cycling, until recently given up due to serious problems with my shoulder, but still row up the gym, and use weights.

Kettle bells are good provided you you use them right.

Recently started started doing a class up the gym called Body Jam, very different dance based thingy, good fun, and not that easy (maybe just a bloke thing lol) but found it to be amazing for the six (or helping to get the 8 pack) helping with my shoulder.

Body pump is another pretty good thing if running in your gym.

I used to do lots of cycling - a good few miles most days (I used to cycle to work which was three miles each way, lots of uphill) but since I moved to Edinburgh I've hardly been cycling at all: the roads here put me off ...

I do plenty of walking (its 2.5 miles to where I work) and do lots of hill walking in summer. I also try to get out running at least 3 times a week, for at least half an hour at a time.

I also want to start hiking again but unfortunately have no-one to go with

Shame that you're the complete opposite end of the country because I enjoy hiking. That and walking the dog are my main sources of exercise.

I used to be a gymnast when I was younger, but the old bones are a bit past that now

Oh, and i've taken to doing a bit of walking, usually around
the lakes and such, mainly with the camera rather than for
excersise but its surprising how 10 or 12k comes up on my
little meter thingy...

I am supposed to go to the gym 2 to 3 times a week to do a routine to keep my back from stiffening up. But I hate it, so I tend not to go very often!!

In summer, I try to wakeboard and waterski most weekends behind my jetski - but that is dependant on the sea not being too rough to launch
I also try to get out walking and climbing as much as possible
I go to the indoor climbing wall most weeks too.

Is there not a local Ramblers Association in Glasgow? I'm sure there is!
If you ever get to Manchester (on a Wednesday!) you would be most welcome to come with us! (3 blokes and occasionaly 1 Daughter!)
Have you not got the skills to get out there on your own? It's not rocket science, simple map reading and compass work is all!

Neil what a workout! Looks like your keeping it different all the time, I usually try to do that on my routines.

Yeah that would have been handy! I would have love to have stuck to gymnastics in school, bit past it now! :D

Gembobs, the climbing thing is something I keep meaning to try. I think ill wait until my overall fitness gets better.

Yes there is a few that I've found closer to me, might try them out! I could probably do it on my own when the weather gets better, still a lot of fog where I am!

Still burning peat then? :D

Routines are poor for general fitness, keeping it mixed is far better, unless you have specific goal, that doesnt include weightloss but things like running a 10km run in under 30min.

Keep it mixed for best results.

I try to throw a bit of variation in some of the exercises. I've been doing these workout since Christmas, I was doing something similar before, just not increasing weights with each set but then I got a cold about a week before Christmas my appetite went with it and over a period of 3 weeks I lost half a stone, I'm now trying to put the weight back on, weights are increasing again and so is my lean body weight. Trying to get back upto 14.5 stone. When I reach a stale point I'll try something different again for a few months.

Good, luck with the weight. I have always found it interesting that people have weight targets like that, unless there weight limit attached to there sport. I had to lose some recently for a competition which was horrible.

It used to be running. But, I'd say since the Autumn that's stopped. It's depressing. I now have to stop every five minutes or so, and have slowed right down. Now, I know I can get back to where I was, but feel quite ashamed of myself for letting myself go - I have no excuse, I know how exercise is worthwhile, and what foods to eat.

I have also gained about ten pounds - not an enormous amount, but again, it's depressing since I worked quite hard to get to where I wanted to be. Not just about weight, but about being healthy. I am supposed to be going on a beach holiday in a month and do not want to look a right podge on said beach.

The good news is that I am picking up my gym routine again, albeit slowly, with a jog/walk for an hour on sundays. I've quit the endless diet cokes the past two weeks, and cut my coffee to one in the morning, opting for green tea instead. Out have gone the cheese and biscuits at 9 pm too. I seem to be less successful in cutting out the vodka at weekends .... but it's one of the better drinks, calorie wise.

Stupid question: What's a kettlebell?

kettle bell is a solid metal ball with a handle. They come id different weights so you can swing them in ways youcant with normal weights

The mess the works gym was in yesterday morning, I think someone on the night shift had been having a damn good try.:bang::bang:
Only things I hate about the gym is people too lazy to put the dumbells and plates back on the racks and people who strip weights off the barbells or smith machine leaving more weight on one end than the other.:nono:

Yeah why the hell people do that i 'll never know, but the other that hacks me off is when you get a small group of 2-4 with a massive selection of dumbells then spend 20min chatting between sets!

I'm fortunate in that using the works gym, I usually have it to myself first thing in the morning when I'm on early shift and when I'm training before a late shift, there aren't that many people in the gym and if there is a few people, they are on their 1/2 hr lunch break so have little time to stand around chatting.
