Yes
I shot these photos under heavy sunlight . All the faces of the dark skinned players were almost impossible to identify . Then I reduced the contrast but still it was not 100% right .Later on pictures were alright under the overcast conditions.

Thanks in advance

Hi there.

I'm no expert, but in my opinion the photo's aren't really in focus. Perhaps that's because of the lighting situations...

They also seem a little grainy... ( did you have the ISO highe accidently ) ?

The out of focus could also be because you might have chosen too slow a shutter speed, and hence the slower shutter speed would let in more light which is where you got your lighting problems..

Just a few guesses, i'm about as amateur as you can get though!

Your camera is metering for the whole scene. The majority of which is grass, hence the grass is well exposed. You would have to either spot meter the players faces and you could overexpose the grass or make sure the light in hitting the players faces. In this case the light is coming from high right in the last shot ( I can tell from the shirt on the left) so all the players faces are in shade.

So either choose a position where their faces are lit or spot meter and lose the grass.

Only other option is to try to fix it in PP by burning in the faces or using some sort of pseudo hdr.

Fortunately this is quite a simple fix. As with all people shots you want to expose for the light on the face. I'm guessing you were using an auto or semi auto mode so the camera thinks that everything is exposed OK. However as the subjects are backlit then you need to get more light in so either dial in some positive exposure compensation or shoot in manual and set the exposure correctly for the scene.

Cheers guys ,
I was shooting in low ISO but softness is more due to 2X extender on 100-400 mm I think .Slow shutter speeds as well

I was shooting in manual mode but I am still very very new in this hobby.

That makes two of us:)

These are taken during the overcast conditions . Edited with PP for sharpness

I love how on the 3rd one you managed to capture the two things parallel with each other in mid-air!

Dark faces, in strong back-lighting and therefore heavy shadow = under-exposed.

You need to get some more light on the faces, which happens naturally when it's overcast. Either move around and shoot with the sun behind you, or expose for the faces - in which case everything not in shade like the background/grass will inevitably be over-exposed.

You could probably improve things quite a bit in post processing, but basically the dynamic range (ratio of light to dark) is too high.

2x convertor on a 100-400 will give you f11 at 400mm setting on the lens. You'll need to up the iso to give you a decent shutter speed, but you'll have a very good depth of field at that point, so it's worth switching to manual for focussing and pick a point and just leave it on that. Also switch to manual for the settings and dial in the shutter speed and exposure, remembering to check if the sun comes out, goes behind cloud etc that you may need to change.
you've got a great capture of the ball hitting the wicket.

Isn't that something on the grass in the background?
