Guys i got a big buzz at my ear when in my garden and slapped this beast. Its about three times the size of a wasp. Anyone know what it is? 20190725_184133.jpeg

IMO this is one of the Horsefly species, they can and do bite and leave a nasty weal/hive red sore spot with blood drawn!

Cheers mate. Cant believe how big it is. I've saw horsefly before but nowhere near this size.

Big and tough......I was bitten on my arm a couple of years back.

Never heard it or realised I was being bitten, my usual response if an insect lands on me is to blow hard to drive it away. It did not budge I had to flick it quite hard and I was left bleeding........ FWIW I let it bleed freely to flush the wound before staunching it and covering it up!

I wasn't bitten thankfully. I did read that it stops the noise as it settles to feed. Thank God i heard it. I got stung on the jaw by a wasp a few months back that must have been on my collar. Not pleasant.

Horseflies are strong insects and are capable of flying in moderate wind so, as you unfortunately found out, blowing them away is often ineffective.

Have to say I have quite an interest for them but that is probably because apart from the initial bite, which is severe I have no reaction to them, or rather to the types I've been bitten by so far. Mrs Tringa doesn't share my view as she reacts badly to them with a raised, hot, very itchy weal.

My wife also reacts in the same way. She has found blasting the bite with a hot hairdryer, a few times a day really reduces the swelling. It's something to do with breaking down the toxins.

It's only the females bite. They need the protein to produce eggs.

Would have liked this post but it would be wrong to like a horsefly bite!!! Just seeing one makes me itch and a bite can stay itchy for weeks.

Strangely enough, the pro in the club shop caught one of the big muthas last week - I thought it was a weird kind of hornet when I first saw it but he apped a snap of it (don't know the name of the app) and it came back as a horsefly, then Googling the species name found more images of the same thing.
