Hi.

I've been pulling my hair out trying to find out what these are called. :bang:

I've heard a few things like foam core or something around those lines, but I'm having serious dificulty finding out what their called.

Secondly WHERE on earth do I find them? I really could do with a few.

(The things that are either side of the model, just in case)

What they're called is studio flats.
What they're made of varies, our American brothers talk about foamcore, we usually use polystyrene as per building insulation - paint one side matt black and you then have both a reflector and an absorber.

Get them from anywhere that sells building materials

Call me a cheapskate but they look very much like the sort of thing you could make yourself and save quite a bit of money.

That's what I use.. large polystyrene sheets. One side painted black.. one left white.

They are just large reflectors, and as you would expect, Garry is correct... they're called flats. The black side I'd use to be a ant-reflector... to soak up stray light.

Polyboards , I got 2, 8ft x4ft x 2" from builders merchant £10 each

I thought they may have been polystyrene boards.

I was at wicks the other day picking up some stuff and walked passed them, didn't really bat an eyelid.

I must ask... How did you manage to get these home? I doubt they'd fit in the car.
Might be able to cut them outside of the car into more manageable bits and then place "dowels" inside of them to reconstruct when I'm home.. Anyone have any other suggestions?

Well, the question was, "What are they called" and that's the one I answered :)

As for getting them home, most of these stores have a delivery service.

So if you want 'transportable' flats then sandwich your flats with 4mm ply sheets - strangely these come in the same size..
& will not care if you want to put your foot down...;)

Or.. just have them delivered :)

Another alternative is to get in contact with your local sign supplier. They should be able to supply sheets of Foamcore or Foamex (not Foamalux, that's plastic). Basically a piece of closed cell foam with a cardboard coating each side. Light and rigid and less messy than polystyrene.
Dean.

Most arts & crafts shops also stock foamboard, black or white, but they don't tend to sell larger than A2/A3 sizes.

For larger sheets of foamcore you could try Lion Picture Framing though the sizes available aren't as big as in the picture.

Move this kinda thing about through the week, fits perfectly in back of a van. Everybody knows someone who knows someone with a van?

Polyboards. Paint one side black, and put two widths of gaffer tape all the way around the outside edge, curved round onto the front (so use white and black gaff) or they'll start to fall apart pretty quickly.
