What is this banding?

Yes
I shot some images at the Robin Hood Marathon yesterday- Nothing special just some snaps with an old 75-300 lens. I've just loaded the images into lightroom and have noticed some serious banding on the shots taken at higher iso's.

The band runs straight through the centre of the image from top to bottom.

The below is a 100% zoom on a frame taken at iso 1600, f5 16000/sec. You can see it running down his face.

Any thoughts?

is this the only image it happens on?

are you running the latest firmware for your camera?

and does this banding show in digital photo professional? (to rule out lightroom import problem)

but it looks like the image is quite underexposed (16000/sec at f5?!!??), so have you tried reproducing it and seeing if it happens every time?

No, there are a few images where banding is apparent.

Yes i have the latest firmware.

Not checked dpp Will do that next.

It was dark under the trees hence the setting. But i've done no PP on the image.

Looking at the histogram it is about 1.5 stops under. There is a bright highlight/sunlight on the guys arm - just off the edge of this crop- Must have exposed for that.

It looks like sensor problem to me :(

It's 1600 ISO on a 5D classic (a 5 year old design), 1.5 stops under exposed and viewed at 100%.
This type of banding is already covered extensively on the web.

I must admit I know v. little about the 5D banding, but does it always show as a single strip of banding?

Looks almost like it is a picture taken on a TV..........

no idea..

sorry not much help.........

just intrigued as to how you got 1/16000 though...........

Re read the exif data ...its 1/1600th of a second, not 1/16000th of a second your seeing an extra 0 where there is none lol.

My 1D can do 1/16000.. Not that I've ever used it!

Serious under exposure in the pic there though, why were you shooting 1/1600? Should get rid of that banding with a better exposure...

My 9 can do 1/12000th, but I wonder why 1/1600th if it "was dark under the trees" even at ISO1600? Those numbers work out not too bad at f/5 though but I might have been tempted to drop the ISO rather than upping the shutter speed since higher ISO=more noise because the on chip amp has more to do. The banding is not just down the middle , just more prominent there.
