Hi,
Just asking what is the best background? colour: black, white or grey...... material: paper, muslin or vinly.

I think white will be the best for me, but not sure what material is best??
any info would be great. :D
 
I should keep my fingers still, I'm sure a lot of people will disagree with me:) but...

Paper is the best material, but very expensive. It comes in 11 metre rolls, and just about every time you use it you'll need to cut the trodden-on bit off, do that a few times and the roll is unusable. A usable workaround is to spray over the dirt and creases with white car primer though.

Vinyl CAN be OK, but the easily cleaned materials tend to be too shiny and the matt ones are hard to clean. And it's very heavy.

Cloth is the cheapest and most convenient, but creases can be a problem for some people.

As for colour, white and black are just personal preferences. Grey is excellent for producing different effects, using lighting power to make it white or gels to colour it.
 
We use vinyl but it is a permanant fixture, but as Garry has said, it is very heavy if it is part of a mobile set up. We changed from paper to vinyl for our main shooting area simply because of costs. We also have a black velvet backdrop, still quite heavy and once again, a permanant fixture.

We do use gray paper and we get some great results with it.
 
I use a 3mtr x 6mtr roll of white vinyl (about £10/m from marquee makers) it is heavy as said but if used alot then paper just becomes soooo expensive to keep throwing it away. Just make sure your support system is heavy duty :thumbs:

As for colour, I'd go with white as you can always gel or turn off the BG lights for creative work (you'll be pushed to create black though, without a black BG to start with and pref a light-absorbant one like velvet).

I feel grey allows more creative control as you can make a grey background;
Grey, White, Black, Well any colour with gels.
Whereas it's harder to make a white background black
 
I agree with the last bit (hence the addition in brackets in my post which crossed with yours LOL) but I'd like to see you turn a grey floor white... it's hard enough getting a white one perfect SOOC ;)
 
Just use white gloss tile board for the floor and light the grey background to white.
 
True. If I wanted to be doing mobile white-out portraits then I think I'd be looking at using a hi-lite background with a train.
 
You can get full length white with the train, the main thing is the portability and speed of setup. I don't use it myself as I don't do mobile white-out portrait work but if I did then that's what I'd turn to.
