Hi everyone,

First post from me but I've been reading the site for a while.

I run furniture website Out There Interiors. Until very recently we have taken (pretty terrible) shots of our products outside with a compact camera, but recently decided it was time to do a better job. We have had a studio built, and purchased a Canon 500D to get us better shots.

Since then I have become interested in learning a lot more about photography, and have been experimenting with settings and post production (although still a complete novice).

Anyway, I've started to get some better shots, but upon uploading them to the web, the image becomes blurry. Not sure if I'm able to post links, but here is an example:

http://www.outthereinteriors.com/chest-of-drawers/antique-green-chest.html

The new (interior) shot is not sharp. I have not resized it (so it's still a massive file) and before uploading it to the web it looked nice and crisp. Any ideas why this is happening?

Many thanks
Jenny

Have you tried resizing the image prior to upload? It could be something was lost where bicubic smoothing is concerned during the process.

Hi, thanks for the reply.

I have. I usually resize so not to slow the site down.

I uploaded the large file to see whether this removed the blur, but it's the same regardless... really frustrating!

Ideally when you put a picture on the website you should resize the photograph to exactly the dimentions you are going to display it. The web site code should specify the dimentions anyway so all you need to do is make sure you resize o the size specified in the web code.

You could try sharpening the image at the last stage, after any editing and resizing. Do a few test ones at different amounts and see the result after uploading

Thanks for the last two replies. Both good suggestions but unfortunately not fixing it. Andy, the site does this automatically, and we have a zoom on the product pages, so the larger the image is in reality the better it works. The reason I thought this was a photography question is that the site appears to be handling the new images (from the DSLR) in a different way. I've contacted my developers to see if they can shed any light.
Many thanks
Jenny

Let us know when you find the solution Jenny - it will be useful to know. I still think it's to do with the sizing. I appreciate you want the large image but the image from your DSLR is still likely to be much bigger than necessary which means the browser needs to downsize it. I think the problem you are having is the method of downsizing which is why I suggest finding out the size the website will display at (largest zoom) and resizing your image to match.

But I could be wrong :)

I have this reply from someone who knows a bit. It might help...

"That website re-generates the image on three different sizes:

http://www.outthereinteriors.com/med...5/2/_/2_31.JPG
http://www.outthereinteriors.com/med...5/2/_/2_31.JPG
http://www.outthereinteriors.com/med...d/2/_/2_31.JPG

Other websites might do different things. On top of resizing, there's the re-compression to jpeg again (on top of the original jpeg losses). There's not much you can do about this other than making sure the image being uploaded is as high quality and resolution as you can. If you must use jpeg for the image to be uploaded, tweak the compression settings for max quality. If the website allows other formats for uploading, consider using PNG24 as this format is lossless."

Upload the images as high res as possible (say 300dpi) and if you're using Ps set the quality to 12.

I hope this helps.

I'm pretty sure sizing to dpi300 won't make any difference. Setting the JPG quality to 12 should help though if it's not already being done

Wicked advice guys, thanks. I will try all of the above and let you know how I get on. Much appreciated!
