I know this isn't a photographic question, but I keep seeing the letters lol in various threads. I realize that it is an acronym, but what does it mean, or am I just being dumb?
 
Laughing out loud it means

or lmao - laughing my arse off

Just another way to say you find something funny :)

No thats not true.. its laugh out loud.
 
lol used to mean laughing out loud but now it has become so overused and has lost its meaning that it is basically just a sentence filler. When people say 'lol', very rarely if ever have they actually laughed. It's also a sign that someone is getting bored of you if they just said it on an instant message session six times in a row.

theres a few interpretation to LOL.

One is reserved for togs and is frequently used by my wife when referring to me and the amount of time I spend on my photography... it loosely translates to:

Lonely Old Loser :D
 
lol = i have nothing of any value to add but feel the need to say something anyway.
 
If I find something genuinely funny, I type hee hee or ha ha. I try not to use lol

Thanks very much for the infomation, it was driving me barmy trying to figure it out. I had googled acronym but I couldn't see anything related to photography. Great response as usual.

Being serious now, I never do this LOL thing in any posts I drop off in any internet forums or in any text message I send to anyone. If I'm finding something that is funny then I do a TV subtitle-style FX; like for eg: *sniggers*, or a traditional "haha" or "heh", or use them face icons.

Believe it or not, but I one actually heard someone physically say "LOL" when he heard something that was funny! It was definitely a real . . . as the kids like to say . . . WTF moment.

I have never once written it in my life and never will. And I have never used text speak in text messages. Every word has always been fully and correctly written. The youngsters in my life know to do this in return because they know how much it irritates me and they'll pay the price at Christmas and birthdays.

I once got a lol from a girl texting me and it did make me think she liked me. You really have to keep up these days eh?
