It's the data for a photo.
It gives information for exposure, focal length, f-stop, iso setting etc etc.
If you right click on a photo on your PC, then select 'properties' then the click on the 'details tab, you will see exif data.

Most, if not, all cameras embed information into an image when it's taken. Things like the camera model, settings etc. These are the exif information.
A good, free exif viewer is opanda .. google it for download then right click on images you see here and around the internet to see the camera settings used.

I'm not knowledgable enough to give you the full details of it but exif is the digital data stored within an image that tells you what settings were used in creating the photo. The exif data will give you info such as the camera type, focal length, shutter speed, aperture, ISO, white balance, image size etc.

Agree, 1 thing to remember if you save you images "for the web" in Photoshop, it will strip your exif information.

EXIF stands for Exchangeable Image File Format, and is a standard for storing interchange information in image files, especially those using JPEG compression. Most digital cameras now use the EXIF format. The format is part of the DCF standard created by JEITA to encourage interoperability between imaging devices.
