I don't think I'm particularly gifted or creative either... I tend to think of myself as a technician more than anything; but I get glimpses of creativity at times.
I understand how the gear can affect the images you take. But for me, it's usually that the intent dictates the gear... I.e. I want to do some candid street/life type of photography so I take my Fuji X20 instead of a bigger camera with a longer lens. I suppose the opposite is also true to an extent... i.e. I usually have a camera with me somewhere even when the intent is not photography. And in that case the gear may dictate the images/style I look for. But I still feel like that's just as often not taking a picture seen/opportunity because the kit on hand is not suitable.
