Hi everyone!

Hoping for a little bit of pointing in the right direction, never had this problem before

See attached images - huge bright band across the image when shooting in broad daylight (much worse wide open at 2.8 and much better at f8 and above)

I have two Sony a7iii mirrorless bodies and two nice Tamron lenses so swapped everything over and it's definitely the body/sensor.
- Body 1 had the bright line with 2 diff lenses
- Body 2 was perfect with the same 2 diff lenses

I assume it's sensor burn or something but never experienced it so any advice and possible fix options would be really appreciated!!

You have narrowed it down to new camera fault. This is an instant return for a full refund.

Just exploring possible causes....,..

Is the problem with both Mechanical and/or electronic (silent) shutter?

Thanks so much for making me think about this - I checked with/ without silent shutter and it made no difference

BUT, I then went through some settings and found that my electronic front curtain shutter had become switched off
Possible that I accidentally switched it whilst shooting and didn't notice, but turning it back on has fixed everything as far as I can tell

Tried on/ off a few times and it got rid of the glare effect every time

- Weird though, I don't understand enough about EFCS to know why it would cause such a huge problem

Anyway, very happy to have a camera that's not busted so thankyou for the pointer!!!

I am pleased that you have identified the (unusual?) cause of such an odd behaviour.

I wonder if the issue is somehow unique to that body or does it happen on your second body if you transpose the settings
If you should try that and the second body doesn't exhibit the issue it would suggest the first body has an underlying fault of some kind???

I had a chance to check this against the other body and yes, must be a fault
The second body doesn't mind being in Electronic or manual shutter but the dodgy one is only happy in electronic - very odd!

Not sure what to actually do about it long term, but for now it's definitely workable!

Thanks again for your help!

I would infer that, as electronic shutter images are free of the 'issue' and only seen on that body using the mechanical shutter, the possibility is an impending failure of the shutter, Further surmising that should/when that might happen it will possibly render the body unusable until the shutter is repaired?

It must be a sticking leaf in the first curtain. I would have thought second curtain as that's the one that sets the exposure. I'm curious, does it only happen at shutter speeds around 1/200 or faster? That would make some sense as the two curtains are traveling together as a moving slit opening at those speeds.

Probably best to keep it parked (using electronic first curtain) unless you want to pay for a shutter replacement.

Thanks very much for this very helpful info!!

And yes, all with higher shutter speeds yes - first noticed it on a set of images in mega harsh sun (1/8000 ish)
I tried all different combos of ISO/ Ap/ Sh in testing and they all had an impact but I couldn't really work out what exactly was the cause - I think you've nailed it, seems exactly like the situation here! E-shutter it is.
I'll upgrade my bodies one day in future when i'm feeling flush so might just muddle on until then
