This weekend is my 64th birthday

looking through my Lightroom catalogue I remembered with affection my second real digital camera so.........

I have purchased a Canon 40d and a 50mm 1.8 , going retro or what!!

am I mad?

Completely 'barking'..... ;)

PS after I had sold mine I had regrets....the 40D in lots of ways is a classic with its oh so clean images :) but would I buy another for nostalgia, no.

The 40D was a good bit of kit. I used mine with a Samyang semi fish eye as a walk around kit...

I've only ever won a single prize in a club photographic competition and that was 10 years ago (decided that I really don't like camera clubs!). That was taken on a used 40D on a TP meet in London, don't recall the lens. I can remember taking it with one hand whilst taking a work related phone call with the other.

Only if your 50mm f1.8 is Nikkor or Pentax DA, that would be careless even...

Lots of good things heard about the 40D at the time of its introduction..

50mm on APS-C is a bit tight to keep me happy for long but if that focal length suits you then I hope you get a lot of use and a lot of enjoyment out of it.

I had a 20D for 7 years and a 5D followed it. I liked the Sigma 20mm f1.8 and 30mm f1.4 on my 20D and Sigma 50mm f1.4 on my 5D.

I had the sigma 30mm also but at The moment they are too pricey

I had a 40D, favourite lens to use on it was a Canon 17-55.
Couple of quirks, the flash linkage rattled so much they had to mention it in the manual.
Also the first Canon APSC to have Live View, but it was disabled by default.

It's out for delivery today so will get to play later

I only had temporary use of one for a day but it was a real joy to use especially compared to my 450D at the time.

I bought my 30D around 2008, and it's still my only DSLR. I've never felt any need to replace it, but the 40D is usually seen as a significant upgrade. Enjoy it. :)
