Hello

Sorry for such a newbie thread, but I’ve been doing a bit of research and I’m still stuck. I want to purchase my first proper flashgun, but on a bit of a budget (£100ish).

I have a Canon 350D, 17-70mm Sigma lens and a 50mm Canon nifty fifty, so looking to add the flash to compliment my setup, and use for indoor portrait work and such.

Been looking for a Canon 430EX but they seem to be selling for £140+ on Ebay second-hand, so also just looked at 3rd party ones like the Nissin Di622, but worry I should really go for the Canon one due to the extra compatibility with the camera.

As the experts what are your thoughts? Any of these 3rd party ones close to the 430EX?

If you hunt around you might find some "new old stock" of the 430EX in the shops - I'm sure Comet or someone like that had them a few months back for around £116. Those are all long gone, but you never know who else is sitting with a couple in their clearance section...

Thanks for the reply, I did miss the Comet ones but will keep an eye out, any resellers you might think of that could be worth keeping an eye on?

I stupidly didnt buy a used 550ex when it came up for £100 at one local dealer. Bit bulky but a great flash by all accounts.

How do they compare to the 430ex? Are they alot worse?

Anyone? Struggling to justify £150 on a used 430ex, ideally want to spend £100 or so. What are the 3rd party ones like, heard the Nissan 616i is ok, I can't seem to find any group tests online for this sort of thing?

I'd really appreciate any advice.

Got my 430ex II from Kerso a couple of weeks ago £175. Its brilliant (literally).
You dont see many second hand ones offered on here, so you may have to risk ebay.

Yeah, just alot more than I wanted to spend. I know I should just bite the bullet, but its alot of money.

Stacks of them on ebay, mate.

Just done a quick search - some starting from £70 odd quid.

That Jessops model was on offer a few months back - for £35! I was warned off it though, told to go for the canon.

Appreicate the advice, after alot of hunting I took the plunge and got a used 430EX mk1, from a dealer with 6 months warranty, but for same price as they are going form on Ebay.

Arrived today and its MINT condition too, looks as new, even the box is perfect. Will test tonight.

2 questions.....

1) What are the best batteries to use, type etc, how long should they last?

2) Any recomendations for a good vlaue wireless trigger?

Batteries - if you want rechageables, use Sanyo Eneloops or similar technology that does not discharge when you're not using them.

Check out the wireless triggers from our Flash In The Pan, post #2 here http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=157807 A lot of people are using the RF-602s, including me :)
